I submitted 6 figures for this one. I knew right away I wanted to do Birdman, Space Ghost and Blue Falcon. I also had the thought that these were the HB "big 3" to rival the DC trinity, and Marvel's original Avengers. So with that thought in mind, I went through the resource list to find other "recruits" for this team. Some nice candidates stepped forward.

Now while I was sorting this all out, the thought occurred to me that this challenge suggested that the HB characters should be brought into the Joe verse. So while it is a super-hero team in concept, I wrote them as more of a Joe precursor team...just with more colorful outfits...

(Also, I took significant creative license with the back-story... traditionalists be warned.)

Organizational History Briefing
TO: POTUS
FROM: F-9

History tells us that the G.I. Joe organization developed out of what was originally to be an elite commando unit of the SHIELD organization, named Fury Force. History lies.

The Fury Force legend was created to hide the truth about the organization which not only gave birth to G.I. Joe, but to the modern day hero, period. That group was a justice-seeking, civil rights minded force of change known simply as: Falcon Force.

Image

Falcon 7
>Falcon Force was, on its face, an international anti-terror special ops unit founded by retired SAS Colonel Horatio T. Falcone (though he made no effort to disguise himself, he ran the team from his secret HQ under the code name Falcon 7 for years until his demise). Falcone has been considered by many to be the British Fury. It is ironic then, in this sense, that the Fury persona has been used to sweep Falcone and his team under the historical rug.

Image

Blue Falcon
>Radley Crown, aka the Blue Falcon. Radley shares the dual honor of being the primary financier of the Falcon Force and, as his code name implies, also serving as its chief field commander. His English father, Major Nigel Crown, had served with Col. Falcone during WWII, while his American mother had returned to the States with Radley, to protect him safely during the Battle of Britain. It was on American streets where Radley learned the hard lessons of Justice, and vowed to make the world a better place.

After years of post-War U.S. military service in special ops, Radley returned home to New York and built Crown Industries from the ground up. Even as the company made him a millionaire, he never lost sight of his vow, and utilized his company's technological advances to build himself into an elite hi-tech crime fighting purveryor of Justice. When old Uncle Horatio called to talk about the Falcon Force, Radley simply told him "you had me at 'ello".

[Note: Many Historians believe that it was Crown's involvement with the team that ultimately led to the Falcon Force cover up. It is believed that the leaders of the U.S. Government at that racially charged period of history simply were not willing to allow a black man to be perceived as a savior of the country or even the world. Crown himself was wrongfully accused of promoting civil unrest, and retired in seclusion, if not disgrace. Though a generation's worth of children's stories and cartoons still surfaced concerning the exploits of the various Falcon Force heroes, it is noteworthy that they were often portrayed less than favorably, and that Crown/Blue Falcon was specifically portrayed as a less than competent hero, subservient to his own dog, while also being unfairly portrayed as white.]

Birdman
>Raymond H. Randall, esq., aka Birdman. For all intents and purpose, big venture attorney and "amateur action archeologist" (his words, not ours) Ray Randall ceased to exist while on an expedition to Egypt in the Fall of 1963. Randall was in country attempting to secure a contract which would have allowed his firm and the client it represented exclusive national archeological rights for decades to follow. While researching the project and determining his bid for the contract, his entourage was ambushed by nationalist terrorists who sought to protect the heritage of the prized sites from international entreprenours.

Interviews* later revealed that the attack occurred just as Randall was examining a remarkable discovery inside a buried pyramid crypt located at CLASSIFIED which to this day has not been publicly identified. Randall was examining a set of pristine artifacts when the violence outside of the crypt erupted. As opposition gunmen sprang into the crypt, the artifacts seemed to "come to life"* as they activated on and around Randall. The artifacts included large man-sized wings made from a seemingly advanced (likely Alien, see CLASSIFIED ) technology, which fused to Randall's back, just as similarly advanced tech gauntlets fused to his wrists. With no conscious effort, Randall took out the gunmen, and fled Egypt. From that day forward, nobody saw Randall again as Randall. Thus it was that Birdman was born.**

[*Statements provided by Randall himself must always be viewed in contrast to the opinions of his handlers who, in later years, questioned his sanity following the attack.

**Randall attempted to return to his law practice in later years, under the name of Harvey Birdman. Though he convincingly brought many matters to court, his license to practice law as Harvey Birdman was later suspended indefinitely.]

Space Ghost
>CLASSIFIED, aka Space Ghost. Perhaps no government agent has ever gone so far as Space Ghost to truly become his code-named alter ego. In this instance, it progressed to the point that the agent maintained the persona even post-retirement, and even into subsequent careers, including the creation of a new fake alter ego, to perpetuate the theme.* There is no doubt that the efforts paid off, however, as Space Ghost turned his secret agent past into a semi-lucrative career, and was himself largely responsible for the Falcon Force members being portrayed in cartoon form.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY: Space Ghost was really legendary NASA Astronaut Major Ozzie "Gus" Steele, who history tells us died during an early test mission of the Apollo Project, when his capsule vanished from orbit. In some respects, Major Steele did die that day, as Space Ghost was born to take his place. However, the CLASSIFIED details concerning the event/encounter can be found isolated within your Area 51 Briefing Booklet. Space Ghost was the Falcon Force pilot and tech weapons expert. Many of the devices he incorporated into his arsenal are believed to be of alien origin, and only SG himself was capable of operating most of them. Though doubts remained for years that Space Ghost really was Major Steele, DNA testing performed in later years did subsequently confirm the claim.

Gravity Girl
>Gail George, aka Gravity Girl. One of the least remembered heroes of the Falcon Force, perhaps because she was one of the few capable of fulling removing herself from her heroic alter-ego. As a result, George also maintained her sanity fully, whereas her former boss and mentor did not.

Gail George came from humble beginnings, working as either legal secretary or personal assistant for Ray Randall, depending on whether he was "lawyering" or "adventuring". So it was that she was on-site during the event which turned Randall into the hero known as Birdman. While George herself did not experience a transformation as a result of the seemingly alien artifacts that attached themselves to Birdman, she did acquire several items, most notably a trio of onyx rings which she later learned had latent ability-enhancing qualities.

George had always been quite athletic, having been a competitive gymnast in her youth. She later found that when wearing the rings, her athletic prowess was greatly enhanced. She could leap, twist and bound through the air, seemingly light as a feather, yet could pounce or land with the strength and force of men 5 times her size. Her ability to seemingly manipulate her density* at will allowed for her to become an extremely adept hand to hand fighter. Those "powers" when combined with her innate athleticism, gymnastic training and her subsequent mastery of various martial arts enabled Gravity Girl to become one of the most feared members of the Falcon Force.

[*Fate smiled on George, that her given G.G. initials played well into the Gravity Girl moniker, as the more scientifically accurate option of Density Dame would not have worked nearly so well.]

The Mighty Mightor
>Chief Tor, aka The Mighty Mightor. It is difficult to be enigmatic on a team full of classified and forgotten heroes. But somehow Mightor pulled it off. His was another story of transformation. Though he was capable of burying his club and walking away from his hero persona at will, the fact that he was a warrior without a tribe left him with little cause to do so.

Chief Tor was a Native American born of an ancient and mysterious tribe which legends tell us date back to prehistoric times. His tribe had ties throughout the American and Canadian Pacific Northwest. Both a Chief and Shaman within his own nation, Tor's actual age is unknown. It is suspected by many that he is a tribe Elder in the truest sense of the word, and that his magic is so strong that he himself has survived through the ages, himself from prehistoric times. What is known is that Chief Tor's tribe is no more. So it was that Tor began to wander the world, eventually being recruited by the heroes of the Falcon Force to serve as their muscle in their efforts to cure the world's wrongs. Wielding his mighty ancestral war club (itself a relic, believed by his tribesmen of old to grant him strong supernatural powers), Chief Tor took up the mantle of the Mighty Mightor. His presence on the team was controversial in many respects, as he would at times help bind the team through his noble resolve, while other times jeopardizing the mission through his fits of violent rage (most notably on ancestral tribal dates of great significance).

Awesome backstories and great entries. If I had a little more free time I wanted to make the Hanna Barbara Super Friends and the Galaxy Trio.( I had bases for Meteor Man and Vapor Man but nothing for Gravity Girl) Oh well have to add to the to do list. I really like your back story for Radley Crowne changing his ethnicity and hinting towards racism as others respect the dog more than him. Great stuff I would love to see a dio or even a comic series done like this.

Mightor ended up with my vote, but the more I look at these, the more I think Gravity Girl is my favorite. It's difficult to pull off female customs, and you always do it so expertly. You even nailed the hairstyle.

Really well done work.

I enjoy the reinvention and spinning of some of the back stories, too.

Glad you like guys. I plan to add some other super-hero types to the team from the HB glory days as well. Anyone else who seems like they'd fill a traditional justice league type of role?

By jove man you crushed these. The execution of each is fantastic and the reworked back stories are perfect.

I second the Herculoids. You have got to work them into your verse. Perhaps a NASA mission gone missing? Sucked into a wormhole to another dimension (or galaxy) where the creatures existed?

I so want more. Wow.

Thanks sg!

yeah, Herculoids were an option for this round, I just didn't want to overload on the shirtless look. lol. The rest of the Galaxy Trio is also an option.

Given more time, and had I not been sick this past weekend, I had hoped to get to a bad guy (FEAR Number One - from Birdman) and perhaps some FEAR henchmen. And while I don't know that I'll ever actually do the sidekicks as a rule, Space Ghost's crew would still be tempting to do.
