The Cobra Lair was a secret lab hidden in the Himalayans. A catastrophic accident took place, all those within the bio-dome where exposed to a mutagenic spore. The Failsafe system activated and UV purged and sealed the facility. Something else happened, as it would seem the spores had a different effect to the UV, it accelerated the mutation process. The Spores them selves where being experimented on because of their unique ability to allow for memories to be overwritten. A Cobra Commander Appeared at the lab and his entourage was decimated but the "indigenous" life he found, He was approached by the one that appeared to be commanding the others. He quickly spun a series of fantastic lies to save his own skin.
The Royal Guards are not so much in place to protect the Grand Tribunal of Cobra La as they are the caretakers and harvesters of the Spore Grove. Based on their behavior and empiric stance, Mindbender believes the Royal Guards where once the Crimson Guard detail that was assigned to Pythona and Nemesis while they oversaw operations within Cobra Lair.
