Post subject:  Halo Inspired - My first custom

Here is my first custom. I don't have a specific name for the soldier however he is Halo universe inspired. The shawl (?) still has the Cobra symbol however I dont really envision him as a Cobra soldier. Being my first custom he is a bit of an LBC and I have a lot to learn on painting techniques, including not destroying my brushes in one sitting (oops).

Open for all types of feedback and recommendations. Thanks all for looking.

Oh and the display they are on is a little rock face that came with Halo: Reach. I removed the static figures from it for use with displaying my figures.

Looks pretty damn good for a first custom. Took me a while to try drybrushing.

That's a solid custom, you're off to an excellent start.

i'm not into HALO but i like youre custom a lot. your parts choices go very well together and your paint looks nice too. with the reference shot i notice the bronze/gold on the factory figure. a metallic marker would work well on the visor of your custom, not needed but it would tie it in with the other figure :)

Thanks all. Had a lot of fun, and definitely have some learning to do.

Not sure if it's this P3 paint but it dries faster than I expected. My only other experience was painting one Warhammer 40k figure that my uncle gave me many years ago (probably did it when I was like 10 so, 23 years ago and it sure seemed like the Citadel paints were a little more forgiving to the brush (drying wise), that or I'm just much slower now. Even discounting the larger surface area to paint. Well that and about six years ago I did buy a bunch of Citadel paints that sadly got tossed due to non-use and attempted a repaint to test the waters.

I would like to get a metallic look to the visor but I'm not quite sure how best to accomplish the look. Since I do want the bluish, but also would want some kind of glossiness to it. Not sure if one would accomplish that by painting it metallic silver then doing some kind of mix of the blue with some clear coat to keep it somewhat translucent. No clue on that. I suppose the easier route would be to find some blue metallic paint, obviously I have some research to do.

Right now I'm limited to the P3 paint that I bought. Basically three six-packs of colors off of Amazon, just picked color packs that were decent price and had colors I thought would be fun to start with. I also picked up two 19-packs of "MSP HD" paints from Amazon, not sure how well it works yet since I haven't tried it. Hopefully it will be somewhat comparable to the P3 since unless my memory isn't cooperating the P3 seems a lot smoother than the Citadel I had trialed many years ago. For the most part I'm limited to what I can pick up on Amazon, there is a Gamers Workshop store 20 miles or so down south, but that's a heck of a drive for a bottle of paint. :)

Thank again everyone for your thoughts. I've been lurking for many years trying to get ideas on what and how to accomplish the tasks when my space finally allowed for the work. Sorry for getting so wordy. Bad habit.

Yeah, since this is your first actual custom, and not just your first custom you've shown here (there is a distinction of course), I'm calling this one a big, big winner.

Awesome work. Can tell you are really into it, and that you've been watching and learning techniques already.

I'm not seeing enough armor to feel Halo-y to me, but there's certainly a lone-wanderer-in-the-post-apocalypse-wasteland vibe to him.

For a bluetint visor, basecoat with the shiniest silver you like, then layer with a coat or three of one of them Citadel tints or the like in your preferred blue, then seal with glosscoat. Then I'd drybrush a few patches of dullcoat for weathering.

Looks great. Doesn't scream Halo but it still a great figure. Love your paint apps.

I may have to steal this idea and make that the figures purpose. When I read that comment it definitely popped that I could throw him into a Fallout (series) type universe. Now I almost want to make another similarly styled figure to pair him up with. Also appreciate the tip on how to make the visor alteration. May try that down the road after the next time I get down to the Mall/Games Workshop store.

Thanks again everyone for looking and your warm welcome. :) Now off to the next. . .

I like it, maybe you could add some more armor especially to the legs if you really want a Halo look. As it is it's a pretty sweet looking Cobra Tropper.

The first step of nearly every custom is parts-selection, and you use some of my fave parts with them limbs. I really like their proportions, which are RAH-similar, imho. They make for nice figs, imho.

A very nice figure, some kind of an arctic trooper to me.
Saved it to my personal files, I'd like to make an ARAH version of it somewhere in the future!
