A little over a year ago I was playing Tekken and getting my butt kicked by my daughter. I decided to switch up characters and went to ProtoJack. The skin/costume for the character reminded me of The Thing, only with a glowing green interior and flesh-colored plates. I figured I could do that! I started last summer by priming a Future Foundation Thing green. I then promptly lost the lower torso, which made me angry, as I had to drill out a place for the Smart Hulk's t-bar. I also didn't have a replacement part, so I threw the whole thing in a drawer, until NJC #88 came around. I bought another FF Thing on eBay and went at it. After priming green, I started dry-brushing the flesh plates. That probably took 5 or 6 coats. Then I realized it wasn't enough, and went and painted all the plates individually. I had thought about trying to use Smart Hulk head and sculpt the metal faux-hawk on, but while digging through a bits box (fodder from iwbeta & Iron Will) I ran across this Young Justice Amazo head, which was out of scale for normal 1:18 customs, and looked robot-y enough. I finally painted the pants green and got mad at myself for not priming them green in the first place.

My second entry is BOB from the Atari Force DC Comic.

It started as a figure pod i received from iwbeta. I spray painted a few push-pins red, drilled holes in the bottom, and called them wheels. There is a bit of kibble on the back to cover a couple holes. The antennae are parts of a scale-model engine and a piece of hose. The pod opens, and I have two different slips showing BOBs moods. This is also the first time I can remember using magnets on a custom: the Doc Ock arms have magnets on the ends, with corresponding magnets on the inner side of the pod front.

BOB is an especially impressive use of creative fodder.

These are really great. BOB is especially cool. Such an obscure character and you did a great job creating it.

And not to toot JM70's horn too much, I voted for BOB because when I saw it it looked production and I had no idea what it was made out of, which means it was something close to genius.

Even though these are established characters they are new to me and are damn unique. That ProtoJack made me stop and analyse which is a good indication of a quality custom .

Nice. A Protojack of that quality would be welcome in any scale.

These both shocked the hell out of me. Seeing these characters in Joe scale is a huge treat and you did a damn fine job adapting them. Now, when are you going to do the rest of Atari Force?

Thanks everyone, for the comments - these guys were both grueling and amazingly easy -
