Post subject: | Iron Bear
Iron Bear Oktober Guard General Iron Bear was released as a convention exclusive figure in 2012, in a set which featured the Oktober Guard versus the Iron Grenadiers. Since the world needs more Oktober Guard, and the world needs more ARAH figures, I had to make this custom. The M. Bison head from Street Fighter was a no-brainer, and I'm always looking for ways to use those heads in Joe customs it worked out very nicely. The rest of the figure came together quite quickly, and I think does a good job in reflecting the original figure. Head – M. Bison (Street Fighter) Arms, legs – Shockwave v3 Torso - Frostbite Waist - Iceberg Pistol – Marauder Inc. Baton – Sgt. Slaughter

Post subject: | Sidewinder
Sidewinder Cobra Strategist/Interrogator This is a deep cut into Joe lore. Sidewinder is a custom Cobra officer I made based on a background character in a single panel in GI Joe #1, which I have included for reference. He's a bald officer who is present when CC and Baroness are interrogating Dr. Burkhardt. The appearance of his uniform is clearly modeled on Cobra Commander's action figure, so that plus the coloration made the choice of the base figure (Hooded CC) obvious. Even though we can't see the right side of his face in the comic, in my mind he's always had a monocle (much more evil that way), so that led to the Dr. Mindbender head, since it's already bald. After taking the moustache off of the Mindbender head, I found I had to trim down the mouth and chin area because it stuck out quite a bit. So I had to sculpt a new mouth as well. Head – Dr. Mindbender All other parts – Cobra Commander v2 Baton – Sgt. Slaughter

Post subject: | Snake Eyes in Cobra Disguise
Snake Eyes Commando in Disguise This custom is part of my tribute to the classic Marvel comic issue #21, Silent Interlude, which featured the first appearances of Storm Shadow and the Red Ninjas (and the CLAW to boot). In order to shoot an homage pic to this issue (with Storm Shadow holding Scarlett hostage, Snake-Eyes adopting a Cobra trooper uniform as a disguise, and him being pursued by Red Ninjas) I needed custom versions of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, since I had previously done a custom Red Ninja. Snake Eyes is an LBC, he's just a head swap with the visor painted for a little extra colour. Head – Snake Eyes All other parts – Cobra Infantry Trooper Rifle – Cobra Officer (accessory pack version)

Storm Shadow Ninja Assassin This custom is part of my tribute to the classic Marvel comic issue #21, Silent Interlude, which featured the first appearances of Storm Shadow and the Red Ninjas (and the CLAW to boot). In Storm Shadow's very first comic appearance, he is wearing an all-white outfit, presumably just for travelling since later in the issue he's seen in his action figure getup. I painted his sword blades with chrome ink to make them pop. Head, legs – Storm Shadow Arms – Rayden (Mortal Kombat) Torso – Hardball Waist – Ryu (Street Fighter) Accessories – Storm Shadow

Post subject: | Flint | ||||
Flint Special Forces In Flint's first comic appearance (in issue #37), his colouration was a bit different from the action figure. So this custom is based on that one single appearance – in subsequent comic appearance she matched the figure much more closely. I also decided to replace the original head with Night Force Falcon's head. Flint's original noggin is pretty goofy-looking, and Falcon makes an excellent replacement; I only needed to change the hair colour since the beret colours already match Flint's perfectly. Head – Falcon v2 All other parts – Flint Accessories – Flint

Post subject: | Destro | ||||
Destro Weapons Supplier I've been playing around lately with Molotow Liquid Chrome ink pens, which do an excellent job of giving a nice chrome finish to Joes and accessories. It's a bit fiddly to work with, and does require a clear coat over it (which does reduce the shine a bit, but without it the chrome is easily smudged by the slightest touch), but the effect is very nice. Destro is the original chrome-finished Joe figure, of course, and I thought it would be neat to have Destro version 2 with a silver mask instead of gold. And since I was doing that, additional painted details were called for as well. All parts – Destro v2 Pistol - Destro Sword – Destro v2

Post subject: | Tiger Force Rip Cord
Rip Cord Tiger Force HALO Jumper Rip Cord was one of the pre-production Tiger Force figures who, along with Torpedo, Wild Bill and Sabre Tooth (a repainted Firefly) did not make it to the actual release. This custom is a largely-faithful reproduction of the original, but I did make some changes. Without the camo pattern he normally has, Rip Cord becomes pretty bland because he doesn't have a lot of detail sculpted into the figure. So I replaced his legs with Leatherneck's and his arms with Firefly's, which maintains the same general look of the figure but adds some interesting details into the figure. Head, torso, waist – Rip Cord Arms – Firefly v5 Legs – Leatherneck Helmet, mask, parachute pack – Rip Cord Rifle – Frostbite

Sabre Tooth Tiger Force Demolitions Sabre Tooth was one of the pre-production Tiger Force figures who, along with Rip Cord, Torpedo and Wild Bill did not make it to the actual release. This custom is a largely-faithful reproduction of the original, but I did make some changes. In order to prevent him from being just a repaint of Firefly (like the original was) I swapped out the arms from v3 Low-Light. This was also useful since I had used Firefly arms on my custom Tiger Force Rip Cord, so putting new arms on that Firefly gave me the base for the figure. I made sure to paint the eyebrows more slanted so that the expression doesn't look as passive as many early Joes did. Arms – Low-Light v3 All other parts – Firefly Rifle – Beach Head v4 Backpack – Beach Head Satchel – Tunnel Rat

Lot's of nostalgia in this thread, like finding an old Sears catalog with a year of figures I missed out on. |
