Post subject: | From my Joeverse: Angelique and Steppenwolf |
Wanted to share these; I put a lot of effort into them and while I'm very proud of the figures themselves, I'm not at all happy with the pics. For some reason I just couldn't get the white balance right, so I'll be re-doing the pics at some future date. Also note that the bios are only partially completed and in bad need of tweaking. You may, as always, praise, deride, ignore, or steal the designs of as you wish. First up, we have Angelique: Angelique Full name: Angelique Devereaux (born Sarah Angelique Devereaux) Birthplace: outside Bordeaux, France Born: April 18, 1890 Died: May 3, 1905 Reborn: May 5, 1905 Angelique was born, literally, on a farm, her mother dying only days after her birth. She was raised by her father and spent much of her youth helping him on the family farm, until his declining health as she approached her teens made it more and more difficult to maintain. Shortly after his death Angelique, then 14, opted to enter a convent and become a nun. Scarcely more than a year after her arrival the young nun gained the attention of a lecherous visiting priest from the Vatican, who pursued her relentlessly. Eventually he caught her alone and attacked her, Angelique managing to get away from him, only to be chased into the convent’s bell tower. It was there the priest made a second attempt to attack and Angelique, in her panic, backed over a railing guarding the bell platform and fell to her death. The priest, seeking to cover his own role in things, stated that the young nun had become distraught, denounced her vows, and then leapt from the platform on her own—a suicide, therefore, and unworthy in the eyes of God and the Catholic church. Denied a proper burial, Angelique was buried in an unmarked pauper’s grave. Two days after her death Succubi from the Order of Mary retrieved her body and took it for resurrection. Angelique, who had always been gifted with a beautiful voice, took on the role of singer and performer in her new life, re-inventing herself as the years passed. Her most notable achievements were during the Second World War, working with the French Resistance as a spy; she would pose as a singer in a cabaret frequented by Nazi officers and would use her considerable influence to lure them to her room, where she would render them unconscious and take from their minds what secrets they had. The men would awaken the next day remembering a much different—and far more amorous—sequence of events that had never happened, unaware of what had really happened. Later in the war Angelique would also be instrumental in assisting the Archangels—a secret US unit of soldiers trained to fight the paranormal—in completing a mission in southern France. In the modern age Angelique is a pop star of unusual caliber, someone who does not fit the “party girl” mode but dedicates her time to sick and disadvantaged children, and is known for giving the proceeds of her concerts and record sales to charities that do the same; she is a favorite of children through Make-A-Wish and similar efforts and has been known to visit and comfort children dying of diseases such as cancer, and has been the recipient of numerous humanitarian rewards. As a Sword Maiden, Angelique is second to Katana in command, though her skill with swords is somewhat less; her preferred weapon is the P-90. Angelique is best described as a very happy, very sweet person by all who come to know her. Though her French accent has faded somewhat over the years and she has mastered numerous languages and dialects, she is still prone to drop in native inflections and words, which only adds to her charm. Angelique in her role as a Sword Maiden, one of the Order of Mary's anti-demon forces: Parts Used/Design Notes: Angelique (Pop Star) Head: Bombstrike Torso, arms, skirt, legs: POTC Liz Swan Hands: SW Mon Mothma Boots: SW Jedi Luke Skywalker Microphone: Space Channel 5 (thanks Spectre!) I was struck with the idea to do this version one day at work, and came home with a clear idea in mind of how to do it. Unfortunately I didn't have a suitable set of legs with boots that would work, so I ended up clipping off a pair of Liz Swan legs below the knee, then cutting off poor Jedi Luke's boots and gluing them into place. I clipped off the too-tiny Liz Swan hands, hollowed out the wrists, and popped in To attach the Bombstrike head I clipped the neck off and hollowed it out, then used Green Stuff to fill in the gaps and edge where neck met head. Then I painted. And re-painted. Getting the "pale" skintone for the face and hands took a lot of trying and then much repainting when I accidentally rubbed it off. After two weeks of staring at her face through a magnifying glass I was finally happy with the look. The hair was painted using FW Artists Acrylic Ink in raw sienna, which I thought gave it a nice reddish/blonde effect. I would have preferred the skirt not have pleats in the back, but at the time that was the best I could do. Angelique (Sword Maiden): Head: Bombstrike Torso: VvV Scarlett, shoulder pads created with Green Stuff Arms, waist, legs, belt: VvV Baroness P-90: Marauder, Inc. Sword & Sheath: VvV Scarlett I'd call this a "simple" LBC except it wasn't so simple--in order to overcome the gigantic shoulder problem I used Green Stuff to mold on a second pad. I further hollowed the neck hole on the torso out some to accomodate the Bombstrike head, which has no "ball" on the bottom anymore. The face went through the same issues as the Pop Singer version--multiple repaints to get it right. Once assembled though she came out pretty nice! In this form she's wearing combat armor, a sort of hardened Kevlar/leather type of getup that allows her easy movement but protects her from injury (Succubae heal almost instantaneously but are still susceptible to the immediate effects of pain and shock). Originally I planned to give her a Skorpion pistol but liked how the P-90 looked instead. |

I like very much. However, the battle version needs some sort of color on her upper half. lower half has the silver kneepads, i think a similar splash of color up top would help. |

And next up, we have Steppenwolf. Originally I did not plan this guy to be human; he was going to be a demon, but the more I painted and worked on the body, the more he won me over as a "good guy". A final change in helmets and heads (originally it used the Fred VII head and helmet from the Comic Pack Cobra Commander) completed him. Interesting to note he is not a Joe team member but part of a sort of rival German unit. Steppenwolf Schattenjäger (Shadow Hunter) Real Name: Von Schlosser, Heinrich Birthplace: Rank: Hauptmann (Captain, O-3) Steppenwolf was born to German aristocracy, the son of a family of Prussian nobility that can trace its ancestry back to the earliest days of settlement in what is now Germany. Their history is long and rich with tales of brave knights, daring adventurers and men of military prowess, but it is their hidden history that is most interesting—nearly all have been Schattenjagers, or Shadow Hunters, men who hunted down and destroyed supernatural threats. Steppenwolf has continued this legacy, though he does so not as much because it’s what’s expected of him as he seeks to right a wrong in the family legacy: during World War II his grandfather sold his services to the Nazis to help bring supernatural creatures into the world, rather than destroy them. In so doing he betrayed his own family, who were forced to flee or face execution; fortunately for him, perhaps, he didn’t live to see them return. This stain on the honor of his family is one thing that drives Steppenwolf to be the very best at what he does. Currently Steppenwolf heads up the Schattenjaegars, an elite unit of the German army whose job is to battle the supernatural, similar to the American Vanguard (formerly GI Joe) unit. The difference is Steppenwolf’s team is more experienced and better equipped—each wears a self-contained combat suit with built-in heating and cooling controls which is both tear- and bullet-resistant, self-medicating, and riddled with both technological and arcane artifacts designed to protect them from attack my supernatural creatures. The helmet contains a built-in HUD, re-breather, and can switch through several levels of imaging including night vision, infra-red and “spectra-vision”, which allows the detecting of supernatural creatures hidden in human form. Weapons vary, though Steppenwolf prefers the G-36C and a Dragunov sniper rifle he was given during the Third World War. A man with little humor and a serious demeanor, there is no doubt he knows well how to do his job, and does it with discretion and a large degree of honor; though his sense of pride and duty can at times make him seem single-minded and a bit abrasive. Parts Used: Head: DTC Salvo Torso, waist: ST Iron Grenadier Legs: VvV Razorclaw Arms: VvV Cobra Commander HK G36C & Dragunov Sniper Rifle: Marauder, Inc. Helmet: SW Comic Pack Luke, w/ hose removed |

There is color (touches at the throat and below the shoulder pads, plus the buckle straps along one side of the torso) but the pics came out so bad it doesn't show very well. Not having any luck getting clearer ones so when I finally get off my duff and get a light tent built, I'll re-shoot them. |

Very cool - the only issues I see at all are that Steppenwolf's legs look a little stubby - likely because the IG torso (the best one ever made, IMO) is pretty long, so I'm not sure if it meshes well with the legs. Still - the figure is awesome and I love seeing that Luke helmet getting some more love Angelique is pretty sweet all the way around on both versions. The only thing (and it's a factory problem, not yours) is that in "pop star" mode, the way she's holding the mic makes her look more like a reporter than a singer. Love the bios - great stuff! |

I started thinking the same thing as I was taking pics--and that's bad, because when I get ideas like that my whole Joverse shifts. Since I have to re-shoot the pics anyway, I'll maybe switch to a microphone on stand next time. However now that the idea is in my head, I may yet make a reporter out of another figure and use that mike with that one. In fact I may already have one done that I could use it with (just never sure who she'd be.) |

Sweet customs all around Doc! Very nice paint and parts on all of them. The mic is actually from one of the "Space Channel 5" figures though, not from a Star Wars figure |
