Yeah, resin is definitely the way to go for fine detail. Can't wait to see some of your results.

Okay, just as an update for anyone who cares : I bought an Einscan desktop scanner, a new computer,

quick question: what kind of computer did you get? I only ask because i recently upgraded my Mac to Big Sur, and now my slicing program (Ultimaker Cura) won't run -

I bought an HP laptop that met or exceeded the requirements for the scanner and the Elegoo software. Hopefully my blind purchase works out.

Little post-Christmas, post using everything update: I love this little set up I’ve constructed for myself. The Einscan takes great scans and the laptop has no problems handling any of it. I’ve scanned a few things at different scales and they all come out nearly perfect. Seems 1/12 figures are generally the limit as far as how small it will retain worthwhile printable detail, but I did scan an MTF figure for scale reference and that worked fine.

The Elegoo worked like a dream. I was worried I might lose details shrinking and printing in 1/18 scale, but I didn’t. Granted, I accidentally sacked a little bit, but fixing that in Chitubox is no problem. Really want to thank everyone who pushed me in the resin direction.

I spent the last month or so scanning 6” and 7” jacket overlays and finding good (free) 3D models to work with. I might try printing some this weekend with the flex resin I got and see what I come up with. I’ll come back when I have something worthwhile to show off.

Did a bunch of printing this weekend working on getting things to scale and dialing in settings on the Elegoo to try for more detail. My prints have been pretty good, but I see prints of D&D minis with insane detailing, so hopefully I can achieve that soon. If anyone has any tips, I’m all ears. Currently I’ve been printing with the Elegoo water wash on the standard settings.

As for the jackets, I’m happy to report that I tried them today and they printed amazingly. However, the “flex” resin I ordered wasn’t exactly flex resin. Just mildly flexible. I almost got the overlay onto a figure with some heat, but it ended up tearing. So, I went ahead and ordered the actual flex resin that I meant to order the first time around, the monocure flex 100. That should do the trick, and I’ll come back with pictures once I get it done.

Awesome. This thread has gotten me wanting to get back into the resin, so I'm going to be setting mine up again this week, hopefully.

Still working on sizing the prints and other things in order to get the overlays to work, but I’m on the right path with the monocure flex.

So, a little update.

The good news is that I can get the jackets/overlays to print really well. The details are great and they take paint well.

The bad news is none of the current flexible resins I’ve tried are really going to cut it. They will flex and bend, but nothing like mass produced figure overlays will. They do end up snapping with too much handling or even when using heat to manipulate them. I just can’t offer anything like that to people, nor do I want to use it for myself.

There are a few printable rubber resins on the market, but they are from overseas and very expensive. Hopefully, they become more affordable in time, but that part of my project is on hiatus until that happens. Or I get impatient (and gather so extra cash) to try them out.

In the meantime, I’m still working on head scans and MTF/BFS compatible torsos. I just only have so much time to tinker in blender and teach myself how to use everything and print. It’s coming along though, and I’m still excited.

Awesome! We are literally getting to a point in time where we can make anything that we think of and it is incredibly exciting. I hear you on the limited time though, I feel I have less now than ever before in my life. Keep at it and good luck!
