Digital camo???

Got a tip to share? Have a question about the hobby? Need input on parts or weapons? Have great idea for a custom figure or vehicle? Too lazy to do it, or just want to share the idea with others? All that and more goes in here.

Just wondering if anyone has an idea of how to paint digital camo? I’d like to try my hand at it but for the life of me I can’t seem to figure out a way to do it.

Have you ever seen on Rides or OverHaulin how Tim Lavalie paints his "Realistic Flames"?

Thats about the only thing I can think that will help. If you have a small peice of plastic or board or somthing that can work as a movable masking. as you brush on the small details...use it's strait edge to keep your painted cammo lines and corners tight...I could never come close to reproducing legit digital cammo by hand...so I can't really offer much more...Just remember that GI Joe cammo's have always been much simpler than real world cammo...

Hmm tricky... it wouldnt give u the same affect but perhaps something similar... try getting some plastic mesh, and wrapeing it aroudn the area your painting... and use it like a stencil... once our finished, you can take it off and join up the block sections.

It may or may not work, but let me know it goes. Im curious.

Or if u had the paitence you could fine something square ended and dot in each square. But due to the nature of paint, it may end up still looking a little round.

There is a process called colour eze, which allows you to make custom ink transfers, similar to letracet (text transfers), its a long and drawin out and rather dificult application. but it allows you to computer generate and transfer custom transfers. with detail no finer than a millimeter think, it would also need a clear coat to prevent from being rubbed off. This could possibly work, if you had the paitence. but you still need the materials, which are hard to come by.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm thinking that I might try something similar to doing pointillism. I’ve got a small brush that I hacked down nearly to the base that I think might work for the larger applications and then maybe have to do the smaller apps by hand. If it works out I’ll post it with the formula.

Dang! That's sweet. I wonder how much time that took.

Honestly, no longer than any other four color camo pattern. I basically took Wowboy's pattern for his Gung Ho figure. http://homepage.mac.com/giphil/Customs/ ... ungHo.html

While it looks ok. Neither is 100% accurate. Chief's dry brushing technique seems to be the closest I've seen to the real thing.

Thanks Pluv. Quick question. Did you paint in small lines or dot the paint? It looks like a combo of both from my end.

Oh, just to follow up from. I tried using the hacked off brush idea I had earlier. Didn't work. Just made a big brown splorch on the test figure.

Mostly the squared off lines. But I had an old detail brush that was making this weird V shape that made it useless for painting details, but was perfect for creating multiple small squares at the same time. Plus a lot of over lapping with the colors naturally creates the squares.

Cool. Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to be trying it out sometime next week. If it works out I'll post it for all to see.
