Cardboard base potential!

Got a tip to share? Have a question about the hobby? Need input on parts or weapons? Have great idea for a custom figure or vehicle? Too lazy to do it, or just want to share the idea with others? All that and more goes in here.

Hey all,
We were tearing down a display at work that held those Hormel microwave meals in it. I brought home 4 of the trays thinking the boys might enjoy them for their SW and Indy figs. It's actually pretty cool, and I may try to make a dio building out of it once they're through with it. Here's a couple pics for some ideas...

Yeah that is a cool idea, but it's not easy for the rest of us to get something like it. I think it's got either Joe base or Cobra underground base written all over it.

Very cool...and loads of possibilities with it.

First thing I noticed....was the overall shape of it...and I see a fancy hotel, something one would see in Miami or such. Not sure what way you are going with the dio...but that has so many avenues that it can travel down.

Thanks guys. Haven't really decided what to do with it. The only things I'm really into at the moment are Joes, Indy and Resident Evil. I'll probably make it a Joe or Cobra Base. Maybe Extensive Enterprises. The cool thing is that most of the walls are removable, so they could easily be made to fit vehicles and such. Is there a particular paint that works well on cardboard? I've tried some in the past that seemed to melt the cardboard. Any suggestions?

Honestly my man TR....go cheap. I use the cheap walmart spray... on my vehicles...and I spray them on large pieces of cardboard....the cardboard has yet to do anything but turn the color of the paint. I would suggest that after you paint it and and it dries....wipe it down with a rag to knock the paint dust off it that remains on top.

I actually just finished up a project in which I need to paint large amounts of cardboard...my process was a light full coat on the first pass....let it dry so it soaks into the cardboard and makes a barrier for the fuller second coat to adhere to...rather than soak into the cardboard.

Hey, I like the layout of that a lot. Could you possibly post up the dimensions on it?

That's what I thought.

Scarlett and Roadblock looking over the balcony of a fancy hotel.

Could even be an apartment building with stairwells open to the elements.

EDIT: Why not make each side something different?

One side is the PIT, another an unfinished office building (GIJOE inspecting the new Cobra Consulate?), another side a parking garage, etc.

That way you maximize the playing potential.

I look at that thing and Think Flagg.

Thanks guys for all the helpful insight. DW, I'll see if I can find my tape measure and give you some dimensions tomorrow.

Hey Brad, late to the dance.

That configuration screams Umbrella facility. You could leave much of it white, just add some windows from blister packages and action figure backs, and then my technique of applying scrapbook papers, in industrial motifs, to the areas you want different.

Since it is commerical cardboard(from the images), mabe cut an elevator shaft on one side, from roof to floor.

Lots of potential in that configuration, as well as it seems that plenty of light gets through for all manner of shots.

That looks like it could be a very interesting dio. Can see it costing some for the office furniture/dio parts, though. But it has the potential to look absolutely fantastic when finished.

I am thinking maybe the Extensive Enterprises building, with offices and miltarytraining/corporate training facilitiesfor the Crimson Guardsmen.
I would make the front ground floor the lobby, the second floor as Tomax/Xamot's office and the top floor as their Penthouse. Would be neat to have a removable facade with one-way mirrored windows from the first floor up.
