Post subject:  Removing decals

I've looked around and can't find any info on this...

I've got a couple vehicles that I'd like to repaint, so I'm stripping off theold decals. I used a razor blade to peel them off, but that really seems to do is peel off the plastic decal itself, but the adhesive residue is still left behind.

What's a good product to use to remove the residue? I shot some WD-40 (only thing I have in the house at the time) then wiped it off. This removed the tackiness, but there was still residue. I took some fine grit sand paper and was able to get rid the remainder, but this took a lot of time and leaves, well, a sanded area that I have to mkae sure is smooth for when I paint.

I think there's is a product out there called "GUNK," found in automotive shops, but i wasn't sure what that might do to the plastic.

What do you guys use?

BTW, I never realized how many decals and fully decaled Skystriker has!

Thanks,

Otto

I go back and forth between goo gone and a 91% Isopropyl Alcohol.... Alcohol will remove the color from stickers but does a good job with the sticky residue. Goo Gone helps with the crusty residues...but it does take a little bit of elbow grease.

If you've sanded spots and can't smooth the plastic out to a factory finish...try wiping the sanded area with some Acetone...as long as it's just a little bit it'll smooth the plastic and not melt it all the way to nothing.

you may still need to sand after a first or primer coat....I've had the outlines of stickers I'd removed and looked fine pre painting still show up in the paint.

Goo Gone should take the adhesive right off. I use to remove the adhesive from electrical tape, when I make slings and pouches from the stuff.
