I've built the Adventure Team Jeep, and 6x6 ATV from scratch using sheet styrene and epoxy putty. This time I thought I would go a different route. I've had lots of requests for the 6x6 ATV and thought I would try the 3-D route that way other people could down load their own and have their own SLA model made and they can make as many as they want. Attached are pictures of where I am on the model.

Once I'm finished I will post the file and anyone who has access to a 3D printer can make their own 3 3/4 scale MSV.

Here is a shot of the original MSV

Curious if you've given thought to the cost of having something of this size printed? I expect it'd be rather expensive.

Almost ready to make, materials $25 bucks; having the first 1/18 sale AT MSV priceless!

I take it you have access to your 3D printer through work/school/library/etc? Where all you have to pay for is the material?

Because I can't rationalized how your MSV could only cost $25.. when something like the Vamp missile box from Yettibrew design costs $60 through shapeways...

There is going to be a lot of empty space in that vehicle. The real question would be what it weighs, since plastic for the printers is purchased by the lb or kg, with 2 lbs running $40-$50. In areas where there are creator shops, you can usually rent time on the machines, plus cost of material.
The cost at Shapeways has to cover the cost of the materials, Shapeways' overhead + markup, and the creator's markup. So if the missile box weighs a half pound (estimating heavy), that would be $10-12.50 in plastic, retail, leaving $47.50-$50 to be divided between Shapeways and Yettibrew, depending on his markup. If you look at some similar in size and complexity designs on the site, it looks like Yettibrew's mark-up might be a bit high.

Edited: Because I got sidetracked while posting and started talking about the thread topic and Yettibrew's missile rack interchangeably, so it was confusing.

It might be that I'm running off of old data.. but I was under the impression that the biggest cost in 3D printing was Height... that given everything else being equal, a Cube 2" square would be more expensive than a rectangular box 2" x4" x 1" tall... same volume, same amount of material...but different height... That on 3D printers Height was equivalent to Running time....

Height is a consideration, but not that much. Things like overhang (which requires support material that must be removed) matter more. Again, if you look at that missile rack, it's not that complex. It's not that tall, as printed:

Image

You can see that it would be printed on a plane where the bracket, on its side, is the tallest part. I'm not knocking his work, he spent a lot of time designing it, just saying that the pricing is a bit high when you look at comparable items for sell on the site. And so once you take that into consideration, $25 or so to print out the MSV isn't that out of range, especially if he breaks it down into more manageable pieces to allow for the <10" printers out there.

TEACH ME YOUR MAGIC WAYS.

That's AMAZING. Seriously, I want to do this! Can I ask what you use to design the 3D models? I've been trying to learn sketchup, as I know it's somewhat compatible.

This is VERY exciting!

Dan, Thanks man!
I use SolidWorks for 3-D modeling and save the files in a . stl file format. I don't know about sketch up sorry. Also check your kinkos and staples for 3-D printing

Awesome, thanks for the heads up. I've been trying to get into a 3D sculpture class at the university I go, but all the fancy equipment is in the Architecture department (and I'm in the fine arts building).
