I don't see jeans very often on customs, but have seen a few. What's the best way to get the look of blue jeans on a Joe figure? |

The shade of blue you want the jeans to be and then some light dry brushing of off-white or gray. I think that gives a decent jeans effect. |

I use Stocos method: 1. Dark blue as base. 2. Baby blue dry-brushing. 3. Dark blue wash. |

Medium blue base coat, the a dark blue wash, then a white drybrush for wear. Give the wash plenty of time to dry before you drybrush or you'll end up with a mess. I've done it before due to my impatience. |

Also a good thing to remember when doing jeans are contact points. If the character is one that would be moving about a bit, the knees, rump, and end of the pants would have the most wear, thus the highest amount of drybrushing. FolkArt makes a Denim colored paint, and it is the color of new Levi's. Thus you would need some Amish Blue, then light gray for the drybrush. That's what I use unless it is that powder blue brushed denim look that I used on my Chance Boudreaux RAH custom. For that, I used light blue opaque Speedball ink with a light gray drybrush. |

the technique is described pretty well above. as for the palette you use, well I guess that depends on what kind of jeans you want. You can vary the shades and hues a ton. Just look at a pair of real jeans you want the custom to look like - mix up some colors to kind of match, then run with it. |

What Cap said in his first paragraph. How jeans wear out is very important to making them look right, imho. Make sure the knees are bent when you drybrush them so they don't look worn/new/worn/new/worn otherwise. |

Remember this as well. All of the Dreadnoks with light blue pants are supposed to be wearing jeans. If you are going for a production look, dry brushing and washes aren't going to give you that look. Here are two examples I've done, with two different methods For this one I painted navy blue first. After it dried, I added layers of wet paint on top of each other, almost like I was doing my paint mixing on the figure itself. The contrast is more apparent in person, but hard to see on the scan.  For this one, I did a base of light gray. After it dried, I did a wash of navy blue. Very satisfied with it's results.

I have a little bit experience to paint of surfaces. And on dark fabrics or any type surface really that is dark just put on white paint first then add your other colors as usual. According to my personal view The white paint makes the other colors pop and you use less of the other colors as well, saving your paints. good luck to all of you, |
