Now I am considering doing lego customs of her and I.

My questions:

What are the basics of lego customizing, is it all just stickers or is there painting involved?
What types of paint work best?
Any special technique to getting those smooth finishes?
Anything special I should know, common pitfalls?

I think there's a fair bit of using Stickers and Water Slide decals... I've even heard of specific printers that will print directly onto a Part.

When I made a Lego Mindbender, I just used regular paint that I use for Joes. It doesn't bond with that harder plastic at all, scrapes right off. If you can, I'd say go with stickers as much as possible.
