Hey guys,

In production now so will see once arrive but anyone tried using the 1/18th head sculpts from SHAPEWAY?

I have used Shapeway for 1/6th and some 1/1 and been happy enough. This is the smallest I have gone so very curious to see how they look as I did like the graphics of the heads.

My Microman shapeway stuff is done just waiting on the heads.

Some of these may have had the scale issue fixed by now. You also have to deal with the 3d print texture, although it doesn't always seem to be a problem.

Most of those look really good, but the bald head looks a tad small

I got a few of those gigabread heads awhile back, they look good but they do have a weird dusty looking texture that sort of bugs me. I only started painting one of them and it seemed like the paint wasn't taking well, like the texture almost looks like it has talc powder over it or something and the paint sort of seemed like it just wasn't laying down, kind of like the way a liquid would roll off if it did have talc powder on it. I used an old toothbrush and scrubbed the hell out of them before I started painting so it isn't any actual residue that just needed to be cleaned off.

There's a waxy material that Shapeways uses to support the prints, or something. The guys over at The Rail Wire use something called Bestine to clean that crud off.

The only Bestine I've ever heard of was the capital city of Tatooine during the Imperial Period.

I wonder what other uses it has, as a solvent.

have you tried it? just curious if it makes any difference before i try to track some down. i used some rubbing alcohol on them which was suggested and like i said i scrubbed them really hard for a couple minutes under pretty hot water. i kind of scratched at the bumpy texture with my finger nail it seemed like it was just how it was. but if that helps i would love to know.

'Fraid not. I've never bought anything from Shapeways. There's a whole discussion on it, in this thread. Discussion on cleaning the residue off starts around page four. Bestine gets mentioned after the OP cleans a printed body shell with Goo Gone.

Wow those headsculpts are pretty sweet and bar the overly small bald one, very nice.

Yeah aware of the dusty issue with some 1/6 shapeway 3d purchases. Not done anything with them as still working on the main project they are for.

Will see if I can find this stuff in the UK to help clean the dust.

Guessing water and washing up liquid wont help? Tbh no idea how 3d material takes to water.

Hopefully have my order next week and then see first hand the detail/scale.
