Largest Deck Plate (the Heaviest Peice in the Flagg) weighs about 10lbs
The next largest Deck plate is about 4lbs
A Sky Striker shell is about 2lbs

Call the pair of Strikers 5lbs
I'd guestimate the whole of the Flagg being about 40lbs

you think that if a guy were to load that sucker up with crew figures, deck vehicles, maybe a whale or ttbp plus a 3ft by 8ft piece of 3/4" plywood, he'd be looking at 100# or so?

Just curious, do you want to know for support structure or shipping? If you are .......say floating it on a pool and trying to figure out ballast, then estimate extra.... to account for occasional leaning when playing with it. You might also want to go a little wide on the base to keep her from rolling........just off the top of my head .

With the plywood I'd say 100# is a safe estimate. Given what you're planning I don't think you have too much to worry about. I assume you're looking into buying casters now? Any decent ones will be fine, the trick is going to be arranging them so things are supported evenly. But I've put well over 100#s on some rather small casters for extended periods and had no problems. You may want to consider a framework of thicker lumber on the underside of the plywood though, since with just plywood there won't be much for any screws to sink into.

yep, hypno, you're exactly right.

i'm thinking 8 casters, spaced approx. every two feet or so. between that, and the dress 'skirt' wood around the edge of the plywood, i should have enough bracing to keep the wood from sagging. 3/4" plywood should be enough for the casters to bite, or possibly just a small block of wood glued on for extra depth -- these would also be covered by the wood 'skirt' --

this is going to be awesome....

Unless you're building your own wood supports under the deck, you might want to space the casters out according to where the flagg's plastic weight baring supports are.

Also, if you plan on moving this thing around a lot, you might want to think about gluing some of the Flagg parts in place. It just wasn't designed for being moved and I'd worry about what a few bumps in the road might do.

note: i stained the plywood blue with craft paints before varnishing -
the wood sucked up the paint/stain at different levels, giving it an organic/wavy look -

oh, and i've stood on this thing -- it's built strong enough to handle 185# + of pure sexy!

and i could skateboard on the casters, if i could find a skate park big enough!

That looks like a quality base. If you are looking to mount the Flagg (semi) permanently, instead of glue as pluv suggested, I suggest drilling some holes in the base and using zip-ties to hold the Flagg down.

I look forward to what this looks like when it's done, especially since I still need to finalize my eventual Flagg display.

Maybe I'm just Clutzy, Lazy, and Old...but I never like seeing the Flagg set up on the floor. A. it's too close to feet and sturdy as a Flagg is...it dosn't take to kicking all that well. B. I don't like to get down on the ground to play...a Flagg at waist or chest height is soo much closer to my eyes and I can get my face all in the detail. C. I'm a hypocrite, cuz my flagg is set up on a coffee table draped with an old bed sheet...so it's higher than yours...but lower than I'd say is ideal.

nova, i understand where you're coming from... however, this is the only spot i'll have for the flagg (if it's ever to see the light of day) -- i put it on casters so i can pull it to the center of the room if someone wants to see or play with the entire structure. otherwise we'll just be seeing the control tower side facing out.

soon i'll have another photo to show you why the flagg is where it is... the flagg platform/display is but 1/9th of the total plan...

Agreed. Mine sat on the floor for 3 years and I hated it. My mom bought me a 8ft fold-able table for Christmas. It works awesome for the FLAGG, plus it allows for under table storage.

If you have it up on a table, it actually give you more space as well, as a table sits so high you can put rather large vehicles underneath it, or long boxes of Joe comics.

Normally I'd say that Smurf blue is a bad color and looks horrible... BUT in this case it works perfectly. Why? It's sky blue and makes for a great backdrop for displaying Joes and their rides. I like it.

The rolling base for the Flagg is brilliant. I'd be rolling that sucker all over the place setting up battles and staging assaults on Cobra bases. Color me jealous.
