I use the evergreen polystyrene model sheets a lot for for making parts and details for custom vehicles and sets and am always looking for a cheap alternative.

Dollar tree now sells Plastic and Vinyl dinner place mats that are 11x17 inches in size for $1.25 in various colors. The plastic ones can be used in place of thinner polystyrene sheets. They take superglue extremely well and come in various colors. They can be cut into strips and shapes with scissors or a sharp blade and layered to make thicker pieces if needed. I've found they work amazingly well n places I used to use way more expensive polystyrene sheeting in.

The Vinyl placemats are also 11x17 inches in size work great for when you need a strong, thick, but flexible piece of material that can be glued. They also work great for making things like capes and coats for figures.

You can find them hanging on the end of the kitchen and dining aisles of Dollar Tree and Family Dollar.

Great tip - I use those evergreen sheets as well and get frustrated working with them and would love cheaper, more flexible/easily-workable substitutes.

Will go take a look - thanks!

I've been using "for sale" and "beware of dog" signs you find at Walmart when I need polystyrene. I think they are 8.5"x11" and around $2?

Absolutely yes, K-Mart, Walmart, Dollar General all carry(ied) these signs.

Some times you can find them on clearance.

Also check Michaels for other sources. I've seen other products that come with thin styrene you wouldn't even think of checking out as a source or the material. Kind of a bonus source.

Love these kinds of tips.

Damn. I'm really going to miss this place.
