when i first started this hobby i picked milliput as my sculpting media.mostly for price and easy ordering on ebay. it has served me well in yellow and somewhat less in black. most of my problems with it may be user related but i think i want to try something else.

I would pay a couple extra bucks for Aves over a no-name brand 8 days a week.

Whether you go apoxie sculpt or fix-it is a judgment call. Fix it has superior qualities, but honestly, coming from milliput, either one will feel like an upgrade.

As for bang for the buck, I bought a pound of it that I'm still using several years later. Unless you're sculpting large scale items from scratch, it will go a long way. In fact, since mine was aging a bit, I bought some new to have fresh sculpt on-hand, and purposely bought a smaller amount just to make sure it wouldn't dry up.

Yeah, FixIt can't be beat, IMHO. But for a first-timers I'd recommend the small set, esp if you keep in mind that sculptors tend to prep twice as much putty as they actually use.

AV any further insight on fixit vs aves sculpt ??? why is the fixit better in terms of our usage ?

in theory it allows for even finer detail to be sculpted in and still hold, than does the regular Aves. To be honest, for someone of my moderate sculpting skills, I think it's a nuanced distinction that doesn't much affect my approach.

I think maybe also longer use time for each amount you mix, before it sets.

FixIt is basically porcelain, imho. GreenStuff and such are only capable of a certain level of detail, which is above what 18th figures really want; and FixIt's the compound with the detail our scale of sculpting requires, and enables us to get better at sculpting by tolerating the fine detail our figures need to be truly great art, imho.

i messaged the "no-name" brand about how they stack up to aves fixit. basically they make a more expensive line that appears to be a close copy.

with shipping the FXclay is right at the price of fixit on ebay. it does make some claims that i can't find on the aves product though.

#1 being that it lasts for years- how many?

#2 that it can be microwaved for 15 seconds to make it easier to mix.

any thoughts on these points? anything i'm missing?

if i but 1lb of fixit what is the shelf life?

I've had the 1 pound jars of Aves coming up on 5 years now. Little crusty around the edges, but still good stuff under the top layer.

I agree with AdrienVeidt too, at this scale, the finer the detail, the better. My next purchase will be fixit for sure.

Back in the late-90s - early-00s I was using Sculpey for fine detail work on solid plastic pieces that could endure the heat required to cure the clay, and 2-part plumbing epoxy putty for quick set work with minimal details on more delicate parts like torsos. Since getting back into the hobby this past year I've been using green stuff. For the most part I really like it, but I definitely miss the level of detail I could get out of Sculpey.

I bought fixit iirc and used it up. 1lb maybe or 1/2.

Also dusty79 sent me almost full Set of aves. Not sure when, but I've still been using it. It's failed a couple times sticking to other material lately, but it's really old. The dark part is yellow and takes a lot of softening to even mix. The white part seems the same.

I use baby oil gel from dt with fixit and aves with great success. I didn't know that trick when I had mp.

I clicked on this not realizing it was my old thred. I'm actually procrastinating about what to buy next.

I have much fonder memories of milliput. I think I'll try it again. I used a few mp sets but only the standard and black. Too bad the black is only on the outside (how I have no idea) jf you grind or sand it it's gray.

I'm considering buying multiple colors of mp anyway. I used to over sculpt everything then grind to shape but now I might be better at sculpting.

Recently tried the 2 part sold at auto stores. Liquid steel or something. I had it for other hobbies. It stinks when you mix it. It sets up super fast and baby oil gel made it not stick to itself. I'm talking a 2 part putty not epoxy glue.

That's what I use to sculpt with, the 2 part steel-reinforced epoxy putty QuikSteel. Yes, it does stink and it sometimes sets up a little too fast before I'm ready but I've been using it for years and have gotten great results from it. QuikSteel also makes a formula specific for plastics but in my opinion, doesn't work as well as the original, not to mention it also stinks worse than the original!
