Great Job looks like he could easily be a cleaned up (non strung out) version of the Venture worlds JQ.

Ok guys - I DEFINITELY appreciate all the positive response to this one. I had not had the chance to be online much after I posted this, and I was very surprised and pleased to see all the responses this morning. I'll try to answer what I can here.

I am working on other core characters (one of them is done but can't yet be revealed).

In my mind Jonny is mid 20's with this figure. That means, in order to fit my EXCAL verse, the "Adventures of Jonny Quest" would have taken place in the mid-90s.

I've thought about adding a small hint of grey hair for Doc Quest, though I also kind of like the versatility of having him be cartoon accurate in appearance - I might still make a cartoon accurate Jonny and would want Benton to look ok fitting in with both versions. The blond hair for Jonny looks that way on purpose, though that may still be a bad choice. I'm not a fan of pure yellow for blond hair, but I still felt I needed to use a brighter yellow than I normally would to make it clear this was Jonny. I ended up using a sand colored base, with clear yellow painted over the top. Both coats were thin enough to still let the factory dark paint bleed through a bit, to help make him appear a bit grittier than you'd normally expect of the character.

I'm still working on the backstory for Race that will allow me to fit him into this and other projects. That story will answer some of the questions raised by the conversation recorded above.

And...is Jonny bad? He has just joined the largest terrorist conglomerate in the world. And he has used his skills to some extent outside of the law, prior. But...I'm not sure his intentions are clear yet.

(Well, looks like the comments I left yesterday never made it to the post :-/ )

I love the look of both characters. Jonny Quest is a great plain clothes Op.
That said I'm not familiar with Jonny Quest. I've seen pics of the characters from the cartoon, but have never actually watched the show. I like that you made him older. Really works well as I'm not a fan of kid genius types.
Either way great custom/customs.

Thanks John - I first decided to make these when I first thought to start making some "good guy" scientists. I am not against the idea of the young Jonny, and may still do that to maybe allow for some "flashback" scenes, if this story develops the way I hope. But I definitely wanted an older edgier version.

The cartoon was a definite classic. Predictable and at times corny? Yes. But there really wasn't anything comparable to it, that I remember at least, in terms of action and drama/suspense for a cartoon. I remember watching re-runs of the original series on Sunday mornings. Very good stuff. And if you had interest in watching, there are clips of the classic stuff available on Youtube sometimes. Just don't get sucked into the remake they made more recently. Actually - I can't say it was good or bad, so strike that comment. But in terms of getting to know the characters, I think you at least have to start with the classic stuff.

I'm going to try to respond to some of the other specific ideas or comments I didn't get to before.

I've been waiting to finish my Hadji and Race before I posted anything.

Gotta say though your's is pretty cool. Definitly captures the feel of JQ.

How old is your JQ?

Joey - as with iwbeta's, I can't wait to see how each of yours looks in comparison. Did you also have an older version or modified version?

That's pretty cool all around. You should pick up the Cobra Mantis Sub and modify it back into the Johnny Quest vehicle it was originally.

Now THERE is an idea. This might have to be part of a "flashback" of sorts, that would involve a younger Jonny, if I do in fact make one. This makes my to-do list.

Jonny looks good, but I can't think of the character anymore, without thinking of the strung out version from Venture Brothers.

GR - I don't have a ton of other pictures yet of Dr. Q, but here are a couple. I made him a watch that has a video communicator on it too.

Bindy, your original story-line is just superb. Excellence, as it were. I have been following, and finding it increasingly entertaining as it develops before us.

I know next to nothing about these particular characters, but great work on the figures, for certain.

Brother, you seem to possess a very real knack at bringing new revitalization to older, often forgotten characters-- with your own interesting embellishments. I also love the way you introduced him within the context of the story, as though we are all playing right along. In effect, that is what you allow us to do, and it is most enjoyable.

It’s always a pleasure with your posts, Bin, and a thrill.

Dennis, those are extremely cool. I hadn't even thought of JQ in a Joe Universe. Your takes are loyal to the original concepts, but still very creative and recognizable as new tasks. Parts lists, please!?

Thanks man - this is sincerely appreciated. I'm especially appreciated that you like it even without knowing much about the original characters. To me the originals are what make these interesting as much as anything.

Thanks Brad. The body for JQ is actually the one that was going to be the casual civilian body for my Civvy Knighthawk. Something about the way it was shaping up, whether the light colored jeans, or the belt that kind of rides up high on the waist made me less keen on using it as a KH look, but it really started to speak to me in terms of JQ. Then when I got some extra heads in trade from Carn, wham it came together. I had been struggling with the right combo for a young Jonny, when this version had been staring me in the face the whole time.

Anyway, partsfor Jonny:
Head - Platoon head. Honestly not sure if it's Depp or Sheen, but I think Depp.
Torso - Upper = Snake Eyes v1, black
Torso - Lower = Torpedo
Arms - Upper = Ninja Ku
Arms - Lower = TF Flint
Legs - Upper = Cobra Commander
Legs - Knee joint = Cobra Commander
Legs - Lower = Shipwreck

As I've been trying to do with most of my customs lately (when possible) the joints are all the same color as the final paint job, so there is virtually no paint wear, and the fig is very playable. This is about as much a Frankensteined figure as I've made, and I'm pretty happy with the result.

For Dr. Quest:
Head - Red Star, modified
Torso and Arms - Jet Pack Duke (The arms being lighter than most, again for the paint run minimalization.
I couldn't decide between going with the rolled-up sleeve look, or swapping out the lower arms of the "coat" like I did on the Monk Mayfair custom, but I think this works here. Once I decided to make him a video wristwatch, I was glad I did so.
Legs - Cobra Commander
Coat - Golden Compass
