So Flint was one of my favorite Joes as a kid. I made a version pretty early on to try to correct the 25th figure, and while I am still kind of happy with the end result, I've been trying ever since to come up with a version that translates the character into my EXCAL verse. Here's the first 25th one I did:
Image
The main thing I did for that one, was do a non-beret swappable head, which at the time I was kind of proud of:
Image

That was all pre-EXCAL for me though. My first attempt at an EXCAL version came with the introduction of Flint as the new leader of the New Adventure Team which I was bringing into the EXCAL organization. That post, and the EXCAL version of Flint, with his updated story can be found here: http://www.joecustoms.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16779&hilit=Flint.

There were parts of that figure that did not turn out well proportion or articulation wise, but I tried one more update to see if I could get it closer to what I ultimately wanted (which was probably part DD look, partly vintage, but also something edgier). This was my most recent version:

For whatever reason, I've just not been happy with that figure. Maybe the airborne head, despite being generally Flinty, didn't look edgy enough. Maybe the Darth Maul torso just was too bulky. I defeinitely know, in hindsight, that I don't like the beret on that head, and I also don't like the shiny armor. Anyway, I decided to start from scratch. This is my cuurent EXCAL Flint, as leader of the New AT, and with the backstory from the link above. He's older than from the Joe days, he's got a dark side, and he's non-regulation military now, so he has ditched the beret.

So what do you think? I know the head looks Quaid like - it's the SW Jake Farrel pilot head. I'm not really going for the Quaid look, but it seemed like an older darker Flint to me. Thoughts?

Oh, and let me also be sure to give credit where do. Awesome sling work on the shotgun (and the uzi dangling from his left shoulder) by my man TR1ER. The holster on the left leg out of styrene (added some detail myself) by my friend Greyryder.

The torso is one of the Quaid figs, with lower arms from TF Flint I believe. I was pretty please with the paint apps on the face. I haven't done the 5 o'clock shadow look very often, but I was pleased with the outcome, and it helps sell the angle on the character I am taking, I hope.

EDIT:
Here are some other WIPs I'm working on too. First up is my #1 favorite Joe as a kid, Steeler. Same story as Flint in that I made an early one to replace the 25th version, that works ok, but is already very outdated for my stuff. I want one now that has the "feel" of the original, but need not be a direct translation. I want Steeler to also be a bit older and edgier/darker than from his Joe days (understanding that in EXCAL, there aren't a ton of surviving Joes, with them having been defeated at the end of the Cobra Wars). This is a parted out figure only, with no paint apps as of yet. Trust me, you won't get a Steeler vibe yet, which is why I want to post this WIP to measure how well I do in the end. I want Steeler to look bad ass, while still being Steeler. so we'll see.

I wouldn't have minded a slightly bulkier size, but these are the parts that do what I want them to. I'll just say he, too, is a bit older and is now more about fitness than raw strength.

Big win on the new Flint. It is by far the best one yet. The parts look great together as do the accessories.

Flint works. Love the knife sheath. The head is perfect.

I'm impressed that you got it to look so much like Flint, without having a beret. He looks great, and I'm not even a Flint fan. I think you got taken for a ride, with that crappy little holster, though. ;-)

Steeler's looking pretty cool, so far. Looking forward to see more of him.

this is your best flint to date, the last one was good just didn't like the body armor, the head you used is perfect and I would like to be able to do 5oclock shadows

I freaking love this figure ( I do think he needs a Beret ) but I freaking love him anyway.

I love the last one too. What are you going to do with him cause I'd love to own him.

I freaking love him.

Dang it, Joe, I wish I'd have realized that before I parted out the previous version. You know what, though? I think I can make something that is kind of a hybrid between that one and the current one. Let me look at what I've got.

Thanks for the great feedback everybody. I'm happy to finally have a default Flint I like. I'm glad he comes across so well as Flint without the beret. I debate whether to use a ROC Hawk beret head (modded and painted of course) as a swappable beret wearing head. The likeness is definite between him and the SW head I used. I just wouldn't want that to confuse who this character is.

Here's another WIP - really not much to do but paint. I'm slowly building up some arctic forces for EXCAL, and this guy will join the ranks. He's a sniper that goes by the codename Cool Hand. The parts that make this one fun are:

The alternate head from POC Zartan
Cool .50 cal and shotgun are of course Marauder weapons, and the sling work by my man TR1ER.
The hood is from a Hoth Han Solo, as is the viewing device hanging at his side.
Shades are from GuruToys.
Image

Before I put paint to plastic, anybody have any thoughts for making this one even more cool? Thinking I might swap out the lower arms for a Hoth Trooper or Rebel, just to break up the Snow Job base figure.

While I'm on the arctic, and to meet my weekly Knighthawk quota, here's another update on Arctic KH - real simple (even though I keep touching up the paint job on the head) - added the goggles from the POC Zartan figure. It helps make the short ski cap I gave him fit in more too, and I think give him a special ops look.

That Jake Farrel head looks completely different with new paint and stubble. He does look a bit Quaid like . . . but he reminds me more of Robert Ginty as he appeared in Warrior of the Lost World (which I've only seen because it was used in a ep of MST3k) Image. Still, the figure looks good. Though I think it'd be cool to incorporate the back holster/sheath/whatever from your first one for his shotgun. Quality update to the character while still looking like that character. I will say that those thighs seem too bulky for the torso though, but the Resolute Duke legs don't really work too well split up and combined with other parts.

New Flint - very nice. He has a real America's Elite feel to him that I like. Not necessarily the AE characterization but more the look from those early issues. And I could swear that was a modified RoC/Quaid head it looks that good. I think if you can make the RoC/Quaid head match close enough to this one then a swappable beret head would be perfect.

Arctic Dude - I think if you swap out the forearms with an AT-AT driver he'd be perfect. Or use the same forearms you used on Arctic Knighthawk. Or maybe add in some Marauder shotgun shells or something to the existing arms to liven them up a bit.

Arctic Knighthawk v? - seriously dude, aren't all these little versions of you starting to creep you out yet? :D

That last Flint is nice. Great job. I'm liking the Steeler as well. Looks like a good parts choice and nice sculpt on the hair.

lol. In fairness on KH vx, this isn't a NEW arctic version - simply a tweak to the old one. And despite the hype, I only have 5 versions in my collection. lol.

I think I will try to mod a Quaid head to match. Barring that, I will keep my eye out for another Farrell SW head

C$ - thanks, and yeah I'm excited about getting some work done on Steeler next

I believe this head is the one you're looking for.
