Ok, I told myself I'd limit my 25A customs to my all-time favorite characters (because I have customs of everyone already), so I was working on them and decided I'd go ahead and do an original 13 project, since most of them are in my all-time fave category anyway.

I still have a few more to do: Steeler, GrandSlam, Short-Fuse & Clutch (the latter 2 are on the WIP bench right now waiting on parts.) But so far here's what I have:

You've already seen Flash, Stalker & Grunt:

Image

Updated Hawk (I didn't bother making him in '82 style because there's one coming out with the comic packs.)

Image

Snake Eyes (v2 style, but I think I've almost got him where I want him.)

Image

And here's the new/updated members:

My Rock & Roll wasn't doing it for me, so I went and sculpted him a collar, Dremeled down his forearms so that normal hands would fit (not the huge-ass RB hands) - the sanding job still looks a little rough - I'll have to go back and fix that. But I wanted him to look more like his original fig, so I used a darker green than most of my O13 customs (reminiscent of his '82 fig that had darker paint than the others.) And now he fits in better with the rest of the guys (trying to capture the spirit of the '82 figs if not the exact look.)

Image

Scarlett, I chopped her legs down and sanded her crotch, then painted her in darker hues - almost like the Stars & Stripes fig. I like this look a lot better. Now that I see it in the pic, her skin is pretty pale, so I'll go back and fix that.

Image

Then there's Zap - initially a no-brainer, until I decided to sculpt the harness on instead of making it removable (Short Fuse will be the same styled fig with different colors, naturally) I went with an OD green on his shirt, to give a nod to the fact that he wore a lighter green uniform than the rest of the OG13.

Image

And my first Joe, and one of my all-time favorites, Breaker. The only problem I ever had with the great Larry Hama was when he killed off Breaker & Doc - the other guys I could give a rip about: Crankcase, BF2000, etc., but Breaker was such a great character in the early comics that I couldn't let him die. I tried to emulate what Invisible Wraith did with his Flint & Falcon by sanding down the forearms on SE. They worked ok, but not great. I need to take my time and do a better job when I go back & clean him up (gotta sculpt some bubble gum for his face).

Image

Clutch will be a similar recipe -- still deciding whether to sculpt the holster/vest thing on Clutch.
Clutch head on the Breaker body:

Image

And the "OG-9" as they stand now - I'll update as I finish the remaining 4 Joes:

Image

Ok, and because I'm doing an all-time favorite project (should call it O-13 Plus), I did a couple of '83 Joes as well - Airborne & Torpedo.

I always loved Airborne -- the comic character, the figure, everything. I've been trying for years to find the perfect head for an Airborne custom and was never happy - I think this one works just fine. The next challenge was trying to replicate the color scheme without resorting to using "powder puff blue" on him. At first, he had an all tan uniform, like the original fig, and I painted his vest OD green, but that didn't look right - he looked too much like a desert trooper. So I gave him a muted blue shirt and I think it looks better now (just noticed that I have to go re-paint his crotch.)

Image

Torpedo is one that only recently started growing on me. I guess that's because we was just a "frogman" when I was a kid - hell, one of the early comics had him fighting in the Treasury building wearing his flippers & regulator! But after re-reading his filecard and thinking more about how he's supposed to be the baddest dude next to SE, he's really become a favorite of mine. I went with the "black ops" look - still allowing for his dive gear, but mainly outfitted for a firefight (without the speargun )

Image

Comments are welcome - criticisms will be ignored :P

Enjoy!

This... this is why you are my 25th Anny Hero. You've captured the feel of "The 13" while maintaining the style of the new 25th figures.

The updates and changes you made to Rock 'n' Roll work really well.

Scarlett's darker colors better fit with the rest of your figs and I think with a slightly darker skintone she'll be perfect. But don't go too dark, she's a southern belle and a redhead so fair skin is natural for her I think.

The sculpted harness on Zap looks great and you can still put some removable webgear over it. Can't wait to see him finished up.

Breaker looks good but I think that head is a bit old for him. A closeup might help win me over and adding some bubblegum will definitely help. Nice so far though.

And Clutch is going in the right direction. Maybe sculpt a little more hair on the head so he doesn't look so clean cut.

That head is perfect for Airborne! And the colors work nicely. I like that you kept the blue in there without resorting to baby blue for hm.

And Torpedo... man first you nail Rock 'n' Roll and then you go and up the ante by doing a great job on my second favorite charcter. And a Slipstream head? Wouldn't have thought of that and I shudder to think you sacrificed a new-sculpt Slipstream for this custom ... but it came out so good I can forgive you :D

Nice work mate. Very nice work. Can't wait to see you finish up the rest of "The 13" and what else you might have in the works. The bar has been raised, now to rise to meet the challenge.

Thanks guys - glad you like 'em -- I'm probably happier with these guys than any of my previous customs since they were such a joy to make.

MS - to answer your questions:

I figured some folks wouldn't warm up to the Mutt head for Breaker, but I decided that he had that youthful look to him that to me, fits the character (one of my first customs back in '83 was putting a straight-arm Flash's head on swivel-arm Breaker's body to make him look like the comics.) The comic-pack Breaker head was just too Matt-Damony for Breaker (and I used him for Jason Bourne anyway :P)

Good suggestion on Clutch - he didn't look right to me, but the head was as close as I could find - I'll "grease" him up a bit when I put him together.

Glad you dig Torps - he's one of my faves and so easy to make. On the Slipstream head - don't get too upset - I had 4 or 5 of them (2 from the Thunderwings I bought and 2-3 acquired from elsewhere) - I love that head, although it's a tad small. I used it for my first Torpedo custom a couple of years ago, tried it on Flint for a while, then a few others, and then it made it's way back. I've got another one on my Captain Marvel Jr custom, one on my Marc Spector, and another one as regular ol' Slipstream. He's got that melancholy stare that fits the "cold fish" characterization of Torpedo, IMO.

Thanks again everyone!

Awesome Awesome Awesome!!! Airborne is my fav I think. That blue is perfect. Very nice Torpedo too. The Hawk is pretty nice as well. Really cool to see these after you talked about them.

I love em, but there's something I don't love....

While shooting them against the department of defence binder is cool and all that, shooting dark green figures against a black background is killing my eyes as I try to pick out detail.

Rather than asking you to shoot all of the pics again could I get a group pic with a lighter background?

As for what my old computer ruined, grandpa-esque eyes can see, I love em. The paint is damned near perfect, and the subdued colors really work. These could be Hasbro releases - If we were lucky.

You've captured the essence of the original figs, made them look different despite the fact that only a limited number of different parts are available, and managed to make them look like they weren't repaints of evey snake eyes in your entire state.

I agree, Raps -- when I snap these in the morning, they come out fine, but evening plays hell on the contrast. So try these on for size:

And just FYI -- this was out in our mailbox and I retrieved it just 5 minutes ago:

So my O13 project should be done by Saturday! Yay me! (anybody need an assload of Timbers?)

Love the flash and Stalker more with the new background. I have no idea why (as he's one of the simple ones) but I love that Zap. It's just exactly what a 25th Zap should be.

My favorite out of those is Zap, I'd buy that for sure if Hasbro made it.

All of them look awesome though.

Hmmm. . . let's see:

Older OG 13 guys: Rockage.
Zap: Rockage.
Breaker: Rockage.
Clutch: Can't wait to see him finished.
Airborne: Rockage.
Torpedo: Mega Rockage!

Overall I'd say you have a winner!

Whose head is that on Airborne? Looks uber-sweet.

You really have embraced the whole 25th custom thing, and I LOVE it. Keep it up man.

Airborne's head is a SW Comic-pack ARC Trooper (came with the Obi Wan that I used for Rock &Roll)
