My friends and I used to have "wars". Besides the usual Joe vs. Cobra there was also Joes (and sometimes Rebels) vs. The Empire (and sometimes Cobra) and Cobra vs. The Micronauts. There were others "wars" as well but those were the only ones involving joe or Cobra figures.

My brother did his own wrestling universe, but I really don't remember ever taking part. It was a point of contention because he bloodied up figures with a red magic marker. I didn't want him to use any Joe figs, so Mom had to buy him his own. I wouldn't let him touch any Cobra troopers, because I was already army building He made use of Star Wars figs as well, pretty much anything he could get his hands on, and his "ring" was the grey figure tray that came with one of the early SW figure cases.

My brother and I would draw joe and Cobra character cards from the Impel trading cards and that would decide which figures and (sometimes even which) vehicles we would use. We would take turns designing mission objectives and then have the other play it out ala 'Heroquest" style.
It was always a good time and rarely led to arguments.
