There have been many great characters that have had a pretty bad figure made. I don't mean that the figure itself was bad, but the overall look of the figure was bad for the charactor. Case in point, Firefly Version Two aka Green Spandex Firefly.

Look at this guy. He went from a cool Urban Camo uniform to green spandex. Plus, he gained a few pounds it seems. Also, the regular grenades weren't cutting it anymore so he went and got some bling before bling was cool. Gold Hand Grenades! Why? Because he keeps it real. Also, you have the weird spinning green mine thing that shoots from a gold box via a pull cord.

Here's the thing. I know how bizarre this figure is but I love it! That's right. I love this figure. I own at least one of every Firefly figure ever made and I have three of this guy and two of the same figure with black instead of gray. (Hasbro made two versions of this figure, probably because it is guards the road at the Awesome City Limits.)

My favorite figure of all time is Firefly v3, actually. I'm sort of hurt that anyone could call such a masterpiece awful.

I also absolutely love Ice Cream Soldier. He came with probably the coolest weapon tree of all Battle Corps figures and he was orange, just like fire! I was a bright child, as you can see.

As for my own um, deviations....

Psych-Out: in part because we work in the same field, and in part because his role is very important in any modern army. His tech was just a little too futuristic, and that lime green vest was atrocious. BUT he was one of the few who could actually pull rank on Hawk and the brass in specific situations (like if he deems you unfit for duty, you are off the mission, maybe even off the team). Too bad he never got the respect he deserves.

Croc Master: Yeah, he is cheesy in name, appearance, and role, but in my world he is a creepy badass that even the Dreadnoks don't joke with. And, given Cobra's tropical island setting, I think his role kinda makes sense in a fantasy way. Sometimes low-tech works better than high-tech, and just the thought of all those crocs on the island is enough to keep all but the most determined recon soldiers far away.

Fishing Vest Bazooka: If you repaint his idiotic colors, this is one very good looking, realistic figure. What "fishing vest?" That is his tactical webbing. "Fishing hat?" No, a boonie hat. This figure rules!

I always loved the t-crotch neo-viper that came with the Strike Hiss. It was a great dark blue, and i've always liked the neo design and i really think every cobra should be released in that dark blue.

As a kid i also loved the mega marines monsters. i know everyone hated them, but as a kid, my joes primarily fought monsters, everything from those monsters, to Aliens figures, even random figures of bigger scales i made giants.

I assume by "awful" we're going by popular consensus and not our own individual opinion. I've had a few "awful" Joes, like those greenshirts that came with a couple of the TRU six-packs, and I long ago sold them.

As to the topic at hand from the expected perspective:

ICE CREAM SOLDIER - Dumb name, cool design. Not an especially military design, but a cool design.

THE LUNARTIX ALIENS - Really, I like all three of them, but Predacon is my favorite.

CROC MASTER - Of all of the 1987 weirdos (Crystal Ball, Big Boa, Raptor), he was the most impressive of the lot.

MEGA-VIPER - Admittedly vastly improved color-wise when the Convention turned him into the Swamp-Viper, but the design was always cool.

THE DREADHEADS - Some people like 'em, some don't. I think it's sort of cool that the Dreadnoks have some backup that's even more peculiar than they are.

Oh lordy yes!!!!!!

I loved the Monstro-Viper! He used to not only launch gut bombs at Joes, but other Joes as well! It was awesome!

I've been wanting to remake him for the modern line using a Marvel Universe Hulk, but I suck too much to get anything done on it.

ROC Baroness- the face sculpt makes her look middle-aged but Hasbro was determined never to release a 25th black suit Baroness on a card, only that ugly blue one. I also got it on sale.

Sigma 6 Toxic Zartan- wow, the colors are quite terrible. Despite that I regret not buying one.

The Fridge, goofy addition to the team, but fun to have had.

1989 Deep Six and it's 1993 repaint... they both contained some out-of-place and uncalled for neon colors but I can't help loving the redesign, very cool version 1 wasn't.


Funskool Wild Bill... he's too garish even for Las Vegas but I just genuinely dig the figure. (I used it as a new Cobra merc.)

I didn't know we were supposed to hate on Croc Master... I LOVED his figure when I got it as a 10 year old in 87... along with the Battle Armor CC, they played hugely into what was essentially the last great "storyline" I used when playing with my Joes... Cobra Commander's guerilla war on Cobra Island against Serpentor's Cobra (Think Red Dawn on Cobra Island.)

As for figures I always knew were ridiculous, but loved them anyway... I honestly always really liked Crystal Ball. He did some good stuff for me as an interrogator.

Even though everyone criticizes him for being a brick, I also liked Deep Six v1. Sure, it would have been better if he would have at least been able to move his legs a bit, but really, how much can a guy move around in a dive suit that looks like it weighs 500 lbs?

Mine would have to be Raptor. I rarely used him as a Cobra. He became the leader (actually the only member) of my Silverhawks sub-team. I used to incorporate all genres when I played, and the funny thing is my little guys now do the same.
