Shakka-- Thank you kindly, that means quite a lot to me. There's a bit more yet, so please do keep tuned!

Rambo-- Well, I think that I've been tinkering with this thing for about six months or so, but the majority of what you see here was really done within the last two of those months. I will continue to modify it, as I do have a few more specific ideas and tweaks. Big thanks for that tremendous compliment, too.

Construction Notes:


Winches & Cranes:

There are winches at both the bow and stern end of the vehicle's hull...

There is also a portable winch that occupies a nook beneath the port-side ladder...

This ladder also extends. I had to reshape it to ensure clearance of the port runner. It locks down with a catch at the base. It also pivots entirely up and holds the vertical position...

The Cortez also features three separate crane systems (Excavation, Utility, and Loading):

The first is an excavation crane. Located on the starboard runner, it is operated from either inside the bridge, or from the work station atop the forecastle...

I used a ROCC crane, with a 1/6 scale chainsaw attached via a rotating peg. I also added the much-needed articulation joint to the claw arm, which also provides a juncture of separation there - that somewhat improves overall mobility when using the saw feature...

The second is a utility crane, located at the stern. It bends forward, rotates and pivots, and also slides laterally to span the beam of the vehicle...

The third is the loading crane system, which was a bash up of two different cranes and a RoC missile launcher - with a few additional bits - to add articulation, range and extension...

Absolutely amazing work. I concur with Dark Horse about the realism that you brought to the piece.

This work has so much character, for example, the guitar on the bed. It looks like it has all the idiosyncrasies of somewhere that is lived in by someone who has made it a home. I actually feel like I know the person that drives around in this thing.

stay tuned indeed! Yeah, I keep coming back. The most recent update, with the various cranes, is arguably the most excellent part of this, in the most sublime of ways. The thought that went into selecting, designing, and implementing each crane and hoist shows just how completely perfect this is (the whole project demonstrares this, really, but this post is a fine example of what I am trying to say).

Basically this "toy" vehicle was designed and equipped as if it would actually be driven into the wastelands. There is no detail missed, no bit of gear lacking. Every part seems to function to its utmost capacity.

I grew up on a farm, and around a lot of heavy machinery, and I am struck by little things, like the boxes of tools with parts placed in the most perfect of haphazard ways. The way a person really doing the work would place them.

You gave this thing mudflaps?!? I mean damn. Seriously no parts missed.

And I agree with Raptor 100% about the feeling that someone real lives in this thing.

EDIT: And remember, if you don't get this thing and your Juggler Ramirez figure, at least, submitted to the gallery I will be disappointed. Not to slight any other customs I've seen, but those two are easy JCAs in my opinion.

John-- Thanks! I had hopes that you would enjoy this one, and I'm very glad that you do.


Raptor-- Thank you. That is all especially rewarding to hear. You know, I had actually planned on mentioning the guitar here in fact, so your note of it is quite timely (and very much appreciated as well).

Zen's vehicle is indeed his home, and that's what I'd intended and so hoped would be conveyed here. Thank you for noting that.
Again, I sincerely appreciate the thoughtful comments, and for your interest in the world of FS:2o5o. That is invaluable to me.


Crosshairs-- LOL, thanks for the comments, brother! Actually, I may be a bit of a detail and realism freak, to be honest... :) And I appreciate your appreciation very much.


DrBindy-- The farm-factor, LOL. I get what you mean (and I meant what you got, I think), and thanks. I would never have figured you for a farm boy, though.

I have occasionally gotten the impression that you'd rather be shucking a teat. LOL!

But seriously, I should mention that everything you see as far as tools and accessories is or can be battened down - and none of it falls off when the vehicle is moved around, or even moderately shaken. It is indeed deliberately haphazard like you called it - the manner in which things are positioned, you're right. Although, I would just want you to know that they are mostly secured in place, believe it or not, and removable for play.

Also, as for driving out into the Wastelands directly, that is exactly what this vehicle was designed to be able to do. And the mudflaps (thanks, btw) are among the features that had been meant to indicate that this vehicle can also lawfully (by certification) go rolling through the streets of the Metros (and then back out into the Bush). So you're right on there as well.

I'm very happy to hear that you weren't flat disappointed after remarking at just a glimpse of its initial appearance (in the dio). Big thanks for all the faith, D.

Construction Notes (Pt. 4)

Just a short one this time, because I'll need to set up another photo session to do the remaining features proper justice . Meanwhile, here are few bits of odds and ends, and I'll be back with another update soon...



Pull-Down Hammock:

My wife's hair rings have been remarkably useful for customizing in general, and this vehicle was no exception. A multitude of uses - not the least of which were suspension cords for a slightly futuristic hammock...

The hammock is one composite piece with one permanently secured end, and a hooked opposite end. When not required, the hammock is rolled up and tucked into a spot in the stowage loft...

A strap hangs down to keep it accessible for the figures...

The Captain's Loft:

Home-Sweet-Home for a rugged mapper and claim tracker.

There beneath the Persian is a "mattress" that I made from a piece of felt I'd found that had been remarkably a good centimeter in thickness. The pillows are hand-made, and that rolled up white quilt was actually crocheted (by the wife)...

The guitar is constructed entirely out of hot glue, with a few bits of cardboard. It's actually surprisingly sturdy...

Zen can go "old-school" CAD on the vintage laptop, or pick up the DS feeds. The ladder here also raises and holds a right angle, to be out of the way when using the work station beneath...

Explorer ATV vehicles, as an imaginary company, often include astroscopes. This feature can be mounted on several ports located throughout the vehicle, or it can be placed upon a tripod. It rotates, pivots up and down, and extends as shown below. I made this with a bazooka and a few other bits...

The Captain's Chair is (as are all the chairs) removable, and behind that is another hatch (More to come on that also)...

I'm a big fan of custom vehicles and this thing is (expletive deleted) awesome! One of my favorite genres of movies/games is post apocalyptic (i.e. mad max, fallout) combine that with the greatest sci-fi show ever made, Firefly, and KA-BOOM! Pure vehicle awesomeness!

Again, very cool!
