UPDATE: Got a battle report written up over at my blog, come check it out if you are interested in seeing the game in action.

Hello all,

Now I haven't been here for a long time but I feel this is the perfect place for it: I have been working on a 1:18 scale war-game over the past few years and I feel I am now ready to show you guys what it is like. Now it's a basic version at this point in time, please go to my blog if you are interested, I don't want to be redundant by writing the same stuff here. Feel free to come back here and let me know what you think or post on my blog. Please be kind! although I must say that you are some of the nicest guys I've never met.

I hope I do no violate any rules by posting this here. I guess it's a type of critique but mostly I want to make you guys aware of it and hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Thank you in advance for looking.

random thoughts.

page 18 - The Mechanics of the Game: made the game sound an interesting and fun game to play...
otherwise,
the other pages with stats / APs / attributes and all makes me think of a cross between aD&D and heroclix games, which i find boring personally, and wasted time that i'd prefer to be spent on creating and painting customs instead.

bottom line for me, the game could be a lot more simpler, to be more fun.

Thanks for the random thoughts bro. can I say ouch? I'd hate to call this a waste of time. I think it has some links to customizing, you'll notice from the pics in the booklet that you can mix the skills of figure customization and Diorama building. I do hope I don't come off as being defensive or negative.

Either way I appreciate the feedback. To think this is the basic version! You'd hate my 'novel'. I have no background in D&D or Heroclix I do have a background in Warhammer fantasy battles from which I took some 'inspiration' the rest I have worked on for a while and it also arose from some discussions with a good friend of mine.

The only thing I can suggest is that you give it a go, you'll find that once you have tried it out a couple of times it's pretty straight forward. Thanks for looking anyway I'm glad people are checking it out.

I dig the idea.
My kids and I have been playing our own version for years.
Our gaming table is the size of a fold out catering table.

I'm looking into the name of a miniatures game that works for any setting and if I recall scales. /my friend has a couple of copies so I'm trying to catch up with him and find out the name.

It's cool to hear you guys are into gaming at this scale. Let me know what you think of the game once you've given it a go.

Slayerdave: I haven't really come up with a back story to my game yet, However the main focus is on customising. You'll notice all the figures and scenery are custom made. While I don't have a specific character in mind for the game maybe you could put a link to my blog over at your site? So other people can check it out. Once you've played it let me know what you think.

Infinitely cool, Jac. I dig this whole idea very much.

As you probably already know, my own FS:2o5o is also an original RPG, which certainly lends itself to scale play (and it was actually designed with that very purpose in mind). So I'm right on track with you here, mate. ;)

I suppose it stands true that you shouldn't bite what you cannot chew, eh? LOL. Not everything is for everyone, thank goodness.

Well done.

oops, sorry. didn't mean for it to be an "ouch"... i didn't mean for it to be a waste of time either. sorry if it read that way.

just meant that i tried AD&D and heroclix before, and this game reminded me of them, and as far as friends go, we'd prefer to play poker instead. just pointing out that the game focuses on a target audience, and not the general audience. usually a game is more fun if it targets the general audience (poker, chess, monopoly, risk etc.).

i'll definitely want to see people play this, but just not my personal thing, so your work is good, and more power to its future developments. :)

Like the concept and will check out your work so far when I can take a few minutes of my own to "waste" lol ;) I don't -yet anyway - play out actual RPGs with my customs, but my past RPG experiences are very much in mind when I create my characters. I have a template in mind for each character, with physical traits and ratings based largely on the old TSR Star Frontiers games. I do mod the skills and other details to fit my project however.

No worries mainframe. Thanks Headandhand, I remember you asked me about the game when I made my first post. Your excellent Dioramas would be great 'battle-grounds' for this game. Where can we check out your RPG?

Thanks bro that means a lot, hope you like it. Let me know when you have given it a go. Where can I see your customs? they sound really cool. What are they Imperial Guard? Marines?

Hello good Drbindy, I reckon playing wargames with my Joes is really fun, it's good to be able to play with my toys without looking too silly! I've even managed to get my wife to play! As for it being an RPG, I guess it has elements of it. But like I said I used to play Warhammer which is different, I don't know maybe there isn't a difference I guess I always picture RPG as sitting around a table with dice and books. I remember my parents wouldn't let me play D&D but for some reason Warhammer was OK.

Great idea! My sons and I have designed and are now going to build 1:18 modular hallways and rooms out of Legos to setup various maps adapted to the Legions of Steel rules and campaigns. Here's a good website to check out if you're interested in the game http://los.turtleshellprod.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=4e2c94780eaec64ff2aeaa2bd199b2e2&, and the Yahoo group has a lot of info and past discussions. :flash:

This really takes me back.

My brother and I were huge into AD&D as kid's and we both had joes, so it wasn't long before we were creating character sheets for the figures and rolling dice to determine the outcOmes of table-top battles.

As we got older, we actually streamlined our ruleset and stats considerably. And, since we still had most of the hardbacks for our Joes, we put the figures away and cut out the small box portraits to use as markets on a much larger hex map.

This totally reminded me of how much fun both versions were and has me tempted to try this with my son.

That's an awesome idea for character markers. If you try any of those versions out with your son, I'm curious to hear how it goes.

This also brought back some memories for me too. The D&D thing for sure, though I know JAC is talking more about miniature wargaming and Warhammer in particular. But did any of you guys play any of the Avalon Hill wargames in the past?

My favorite was Squad Leader, which actually went from being cardboard cut-out pieces to miniatures at some point, but honestly is just WAY too complex, and too large of a scale to ever be fun with a Joe based game.

But another game I just recently recalled - and I know I still have it - was called Ambush. It was a WWII setting, as most of their games were. But it took place literally at a squad level. You controlled 5 or 6 individual soldiers, each with their own traits and weapons. Probably one of the best set-ups I can remember, aside from RPGs for this kind of thing. the best part about it, since I often played the wargames by myself as much as with anyone else, was the Ambush was designed for solitairre play first and foremost. I actually think that system might be good enough, and more importantly, simple enough to play this kind of thing in a fun way.
