Well, when Mattel finally got around to doing Maxwell Lord, they decided to do him as portrayed in Countdown to Infinite Crisis, completely out of character with his previous portrayals with an "he was evil all along" agenda.
Well, to hell with that. I want the good Maxwell Lord from the Giffen-era JLI!

So, I used a spare "Public Enemies" Lex Luthor body, repainted the undershirt white, the tie red and the shoes brown, popped Max's noggin' on top and repainted Lex's skintone to match.

Nice looking figure. I have the t-shirt bad guy version. I don't know much about him, but is the brown shoe thing part of his classic look? If not, I'd think most millionaires would know better than to wear brown dress shoes with a black suit... ;) Other than that, very solid.

I... don't know. I'm the last person one should ask about fashion advice.

The original figure sported brown shoes of a more reddish hue, so I decided to go with a different shade of brown to avoid drowning the figure in black.

As for Max himself, I'll admit I'm not fully versed in his entire history, but he ran the Justice League particularly on the financial and diplomatic side (since this was an era when the JL worked with the UN), and he generally had the best of intentions. He also had the superpower of giving people a small psychic "push" towards doing something, which had the side-effect of giving him nosebleeds.
But sometime in the new millenium, they decided to make him evil all along, because nobody at DC editorial could think of another character to do a SHOCKING SWERVE, so he'd been gathering info on superheroes and his running the JLI was retconned into him trying to deliberately make the JL look bad. It makes no sense, it sucked and it was panned by fans. The story culminated in him using his powers to force Wonder Woman to snap his neck, while his robot minion broadcasted the whole thing worldwide.
Yeah.
You can understand why I went with the good guy version.

Yeah but brown shoes w/ a black suit? Still says crazy.

It's probably wrong that I still don't see what's wrong with brown shoes.

Heh heh. It's funny, because add "stupid baggy bandito mask" to that description and you have Grifter's New 52 look.
......
........and just like that, I found out what to do with the body leftover from this custom.

Shoe color issues aside, this is a good ML figure. It's a shame Mattel didn't quite make the arms and hands a bit less gorilla sized, but sometimes it's best to work with what's there.
