I didn't know about any of those HQ features. Wow.

I've known about the Cobra Bunkers since 1985, since my brother had one, too. The best part of that set was the AA missile...maybe some fun "blowing up the bunker", but as a bunker itself it was a crampt disappointment.

I never had a HQ growing, so I never even had the chance to look at the floor section that closely.

But seeing the dedicated sections for the vehicles and towed apparatus, that is just cool defined.

Makes me wanna find out who designed it had give them a high five for the sheer genius of it.

Well I'm sure Kirk Bozigian and Ron Rudat had a hand in on the design layouts. Ron Rudat may have even designed the image on the computer screen. I don't know for sure, but I would guess that to be accurate.

Cool, never knew about those features. Makes my wondering indeed why this wasn't shown on the box or in the instructions. A few years later they did do this with the D.E.M.O.N. and the Despoiler. Small feature, but a big win.

Battle Force 2000 Future Fortress was a big missed opportunity. Nothing connected, the pieces all just sat next to each other.

From the same year, the Road Toad also missed the mark. I think the idea for a battlefield recovery vehicle is awesome, but it never made sense to have a vehicle designed for towing required to be towed. It should have been a modular two vehicles in one type toy like so many other vehicles from that era. The rear could detach to service or hoist a broken down VAMP, while the forward section continued battlefield maneuvers. That would have been awesome.

Agreed. The least they could've done is throw in some connection pieces. I remember some small Transformers could be combined to form one huge Transformer. It was in the same era :-/ .

Road Toad is really strange, yeah. A vehicle to tow other vehicles, but it has to be towed itself!? What the....? I do like it a lot though.

I tried combining two bunkers already in my childhood. But I can also remember thinking back then "how would a Cobra get in there?"

I think the Surveillance Port was a little bit disappointing too. The guy manning the big machine gun hardly had any cover and I always thought "my Joes could walk around it and attack from that one open side". It didn't spoil my playfun though, that thing was involved in almost every battle! One cool feature was the molded "escape hatch" on the bottom of the floor. Looked very cool.

IIRC last year at Canada Con, Ron Rudat said he mostly did figures, the vehicles and other things were other people's work.

But, he did the design work for the Cobra Base along with Kirk Bozigian. Ron painted the backdrop. That's why I figure they were probably hands on with the HQ since it was right at the beginning.

Also, I've heard that Doc's stretcher can fit on the Dragonfly, but never been able to figure that one out.

Yeah don't see that one happening unless someone made a harness for the stretcher to connect to the winch. tomahawk might have something in it for the stretcher though.

Wayne Luther (pretty sure) is the Guy you're looking for... He did almost all of the early Vehicle designs iirc.

Dang. That truly is a missed vintage opportunity!

The 83 HQ really is a far cooler item than many of us thought because of those vehicle bay spots. I just found out about those myself within the past year. Someone posted about the HAL compatibility. Then I noticed all the other spots and tried to figure out what each one was. I got so excited about it all I posted that diagram which the YoJoe staff asked to post to the site. I never did figure out the Whirlwind. The picture above works but I somehow see that one as more of a coincidence that a planned feature. After all, the stationary position for the gun has the wheels flat and that has them rolling.

That's pretty cool about the vehicle bay. I may have to find me one of them now. A bud just gave the Shadow Loo version of the second HQ, so I may get the 83 version to supplement it. I've never seen the second HQ in person so I don't know what all it has in store... (though I just watched an episode of the DiC 'toon and this HQ was not only featured, but folded up for defense. I usually put most of the WTF? moments aside when watching the 'toon, but that one left me with a WTactualF? feeling. I just considered the ability to fold up was a feature of the TOY part of it so it could be put away for storage.)

Some of you have talked about the open back side of the HQ and the Surveillance Port, I look at that as like a girl's doll house missing the whole back so you can play with the figures inside, imagining that the fourth wall is actually there.

I always assumed you ;put the other playsets up and they created a loose 4 th wall

I have two of these (incomplete) and I use the one which doesnt have jail cell bars left as the infirmary. Doc even has a place to put his gear in front of each bed.

Yeah, I always assumed it was battlefield self-propelled. I mean, it could zip around while in battle and hook up a vehicle and tow it back to the back line for repair/removal. It had the feature of being able to be towed itself, so that it could go on the highway (there's no way it has a top speed of more than 35 or 40 MPH while self-propelled).

I remember reading that as a kid and looking at this thing thinking there was no way this thing coould propel itself over anything other than a smooth surface with its tiny front wheels. I'm thinking there was some kid of disconnect between the Developers and the marketers.
Same goes for the SLAM. Supposed to be Self propelled but I don't see how that's even possible.
