While waiting for parts for Project: Quinjet I found myself enjoying back issues of one of my favorite comics when I was a kid: Legion. In what I can only describe as an idiotic moment I decided to do not just one, but two runs of my favorite Legionnaires. The first would show the Legion in their original costumes, about age 14. The second run would show the Legion in their updated costumes (the Cockrum/Grell era), about age 19. I wanted to show distinct differences between the early and late teen figures, so I sculpted up some patterns (the younger being based on an Anakin figure), and set to work. Two months of sculpting, molding, casting, assembling and painting later, this is what I have.

First, here's a shot of two Superboys, done as a proof of concept, with a full-size Superman. This shows what I was shooting for, size-wise.

Here's what I have so far for the younger Legion. No one has final face paint, and there's a couple of pin holes and seams that need to be addressed.

And the older, Cockrum-based group.

Still no final paint.

More Legionnaires are coming. Stay tuned!

These look great, and with the minimal paint on the faces are reminiscent to updated Mego Superheroes from the late seventies early eighties.

These are fantastic. I love that you're doing so many legionairs. The only critique is that all the guys thighs look bulky. Can't wait to see these finished!

holy hell that's cool. and I definitely dig the level of immersion you put into your projects, as well as the methodical approach in executing them.

Lord Nestor: Yeah, I see what you mean. I may go back and re-do the legs on some of the 2nd gen males at a later date. Truth be told, the issue is less with the thighs and more with the t-hooks. The width of the t-hook pushes the outer thighs past the hip line. The problem isn't so prominent on the smaller figures with the even narrower thighs.

unknownsoldier13: Thanks. The Mego super heroes were my very fist customs, way back in the day. I hope these are an improvement on those figures I loved so much.

Keenan and Drbindy: Again, thanks. I have got to get my head examined for undertaking these big whompin' projects. Every time I finish one I tell myself I'm going to do something simple and small. Next thing you know I'm ten pages into sketches and notes.

Just a few notes on the construction here. Chest sculpts are all original. The arms are largely patterned on Mutt figures from the Indiana Jones line. Heads are mostly variations of Galoob Star Trek TNG and Mego TMP figures. Female legs are loosely based on Elizabeth figures from the POTC line. Lower legs are either the Elizabeth legs or Mego Buck Rogers.

I'm trying some projects using foam sheets for various parts. The capes are thermoformed foam. This allows the capes to bend and flex but keeps them looking like a cape and not a towel. Certain costume parts are foam, as well. Sun Boy's collar and shoulder "epaulets" are foam. So are Saturn Girl's skirt and Element Lad's and Karate Kid's belts. Nice thing is the foam is paintable to match whatever color is needed. You can even putty the seam and sand it smooth, making a nice clean transition from foam to plastic. I get the feeling there's a lot of possibilities with this stuff, and I ignored it for so many years.

Shoulda held onto these for the NoJoe, yo. You've got some funky proportions here and there, but I dig the flat paintwork quite a bit. Dude, where's Wildfire?

I'd love to do a Legion Cruiser, but I can't crunch the numbers to get it under five feet long.

Even if you aren't a fan of the legion o the base figure style, it'd be hard not to appreciate the scope, consistency an dedication required by this project.
