Because you don't have to be "in the know" to add information to IMDB. It's about a step above Wikipedia. I remember when RoC was first announced, just about every Gi Joe character was listed on the IMDB page at some point. I'm not saying they *weren't* in there, but I'd wait to read the official credits.
Huh; that's interesting, because I've found their vetting process for information to be pretty thorough in my dealings with them. I'm not exactly sure how they handle the confirmation process, but I've definitely had credits rejected before because of slight differences in job titles from show to show, so somebody's doing their homework there. Maybe it's different for crew members than character names. Also, I've generally found that, by the time a project sees release, the credit submissions are usually coming from the production itself. But I'm not familiar with IMDB's inner workings, nor have I seen the movie, so it's not like I know either way.
You say that, but Reb Brown's name was added to Quarterback Attack With Mike Ditka (an old Sega CD game) solely because someone saw The Spoony Experiment joke about one actor's ressemblance to the ultimate B-movie action star, and for the longest time the live-action Tekken movie had everyone from Chiaki Kuriyama to Nathan Jones listed on its cast.
As for characters in the film and names dropped....
As for Matt Gerald's character... he's referred to as Zandar in the film proper, but in the end credits he's named Havoc.
