I owe Sledge Hammer for inspiring this custom. He's a huge fan of the ROM Marvel comic and got me interested in the character. Rom the Spaceknight was a toy produced by Parker Brothers in 1979. It appeared in a Time article at the time about computerized toys which predicted Rom's ultimate failure at retail. Like with GI Joe, however, a Marvel tie-in comic was released and lasted 75 issues. Over that time Rom was firmly implanted into the Marvel Universe as a cyborg using his home world's greatest weapon, the Neutralizer, to take on the Dire Wraiths. Rom has made appearances since then, but because Marvel no longer had the rights to use the character, he has only appeared in his human form. As an odd turn of events Hasbro, who merged with Kenner, who had bought Parker Bros., now has the license to make toys based on Marvel characters. A modern Rom action figure and comic appearance may be a possibility.

Parts
Head: Track Viper with Sculpey
Torso, hands, waist, and legs: new sculpt Night Creeper
Arms: VvV Croc Master
Jet pack: Styrene squared tubes with EEL breathing tubes
Neutralizer: Lego tail light for the muzzle, styrene sheets for the accordian barrel, Tele-Viper camera for the main body with sculpey added, and Lifeline v.2's flare gun for the handle

I used Tamaya plastic model spray paint for this project and it is by far the best spray paint I've ever used. It seemed to be lighter, almost like a mist, allowing it to dry quickly showing all the details. Not to mention it didn't scrape off the arms or knees at all. As you can see I had to show two pics for the front because the shine was too much for the flash.

Well now, that is just superb. Don't often see a Rom in any scale, but you have managed to do a great job in 1:18 scale. At first i thought I was looking at a 6 inch figure.

I have thought about making this character a few times, but haven't been able to figure out what parts would work. Thanks for the inspiration.

Man You guys keep bringing me blasts from the past (first Doc Robs shinara figs now ROM)
Let me just say this is one of the coolest figures I've seen from you pluv. I have a set of those crummy legs, guess I know what to do with them now.
Thanks for the inspiration bro!

Good ol' ROM. I always wanted a better figure of him. Really nice work on him.

The head is perfect and a part I knew would work for a long time. I just couldn't figure out the rest of the parts. I was looking at the night creeper to see if his torso had bulky enough armor for the torso and saw the feet in a different way. It isn't 100% accurate but I think it pulls off an updated look nicely.

Oh and JoeMichaels, you've chadmattedpluved. :D

It is my favorite part of the custom. Every reference pic looked different so I went back to the original toy and tried to find Joe compatible parts. It's hella sturdy too since it has a pin running through the whole thing. If I could give it lights and sound I would.

Sledge without you showing me all those comics and talking to me about him I would never have known who he was and I would have missed out on such a cool character.

Again, thanks for all the kind feedback. That really gets me pumped for the next customs I have in line. Nothing related, but it will be cool.

That is righteous!

Not everyday ya see a ROM figure (unless it's a DS9 custom).

Nice, nice, nice, nice...
