Something you probably don't know about me--I love mid-century design and architecture--"googie" style to be exact.
Googie is best known for coffee shops and bowling alleys from the 50s and 60s.

I decided my next big diorama project would be building a joe-scale googie coffee shop. Below are pictures to give you an idea of the design.

Realistically it will be half the size of an actual restaurant--I'm thinking L-shape counter with seats for 5 or 6, and about 5 or 6 booths and a narrow kitchen space.

Here's an interior picture to give you an idea of a look.

Most of this is going to be scratch built but some stuff I think would be better to find from a play-set or the like and steal parts.

One thing I know will be looking for are entrance doors. So far the leading contender is the Lil Bratz High school playset.

Image

I think they look a leetle big, but anything else I can think of (Sweet Streets, Playmobil) might be too short.

So if anyone has any ideas or advice. I'd really appreciate it.

Suddenly I get the theme to "Rock N Roll High School" in my head...

"Naz, Naz, Nazi-filled High School!"

Great to meet another Googie lover!

The "Dixie's Diner" playset is a great 50's style diner, though not really in the Googie style.

But worth a look nevertheless -

They're usually widely available on ebay (and are really well-scaled for 1:18)

I understand your idea for a coffee shop, but how about doing alternate signage for the Red Rocket Diner from the cartoon?

Even a 'Coming Soon: Red Rocket Diner' sign in the window. Cobra is buying up properties and this coffee shop is one of them...

I'm a big fan of the Dixie's Diner playset.

The only other doors I could think of are from the TMNT Anchovy Alley - http://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ni ... B00AWNNHL4

But I like the Brat's doors better.

You might be able to get a few of the Bridge Layer's bridge to use for that angled roof though.

AWSOME! this is what I have been wanting to do and never finish. I could swear I had pictures on here somewhere of my Dixie diner. I used some parts from a lil brats café set as well as ALOT of other things.
these are from like 09.Image

the booths and table are nearly all scratch built as well as the bounter--the counter chairs are from the Star Trek reboot line.

I'm using some bits from the MiWorld Sprinkles cupcake store and some playmobil stuff as well.
