Rheems was running a small business in South Florida, renting himself out as an entertainer for children’s birthday parties, store openings, bachelorette parties, and corporate picnics. He attended classes at a college in Tampa during the day, hoping to become a child psychologist. The money wasn’t bad for the time he invested and he had plenty of extra time for himself. After earning his degree, Rheems put his clown career on hold to send resumes to various hospitals across the country. He traveled to the West coast and to New England twice for job interviews, but was never offered a position. Returning to Tampa, he broke out his clown shoes and nose and went back to working the seltzer bottle circuit, resenting every booking that kept him from securing a position in his chosen field. For two years he sent out resumes with no success.
Rheems patience was finally tested when he worked a birthday party for a Tampa VIP. The mayor’s son shot a party toy into his eye. He was rushed to the emergency room and admitted with a serious eye injury. After several days in intensive care, his doctor told him he would never fully regain the vision in the eye ever again.
The injury, combined with his growing resentment for children, sent him over the edge. Rheems began running over children in crosswalks with his bicycle, forcing school buses off the road, booby-trapping the swings and equipment at playgrounds, and sent cherry bombs to schools all over Florida. After several children were seriously hurt at a COBRA run daycare facility, he was kidnapped by COBRA agents and taken before Cobra Commander. The head snake recognized the young clown’s potential and sent him to Dr. Mindbender for an appointment with the Brainwave Scanner. With his mind subtly altered to prevent him from attacking Cobra personnel, Rheems was renamed Braco the Clown. He serves in the Cobra Subversion Division planning urban chaos.
Psyche-Out says: “As a trained psychologist myself, I can understand the processes of the human mind. I’ve studied the profiles of serial killers, mass-murderers, child-killers, and others that are mentally deranged. All of them had their motives for madness. With Braco, I just don’t now. First the loss of his eye and who knows what the brainwave scanner did to that already troubled mind…”
