After the nice surprise of finding those awesome "Skylanders Giants" sets at 5 Below and seeing how great the portals work for fantasy projects, I decided to hit up the Game Stop closest to my house to see if they had any different styled portals (each update to the game has had a new style of portal).

They were having a "Buy 2 Get 3 Free" sale on all of the used Skylanders/Disney Infinity/etc. game accessories. I found 2 different styles of portals (Swap Force and Trap Team). I picked up 4 Swap Force and 1 Trap Team portal for $16.

The Swap Force portals just needed the cords removed to be useful, but the Trap Team one needed to be disassembled to flip the clear center over so that the textured surface was on top. This required cracking the white ring all of the way around, flipping the disc and then reassembling and gluing the ring as there were no screws and the whole assembly was glued/sonic welded. It was a pain in the backside but a necessary move in order to make the piece far more impressive once I modify and paint it.

I don't normally post in this thread, but recently I received something of interest that I thought I would share:

A couple weeks ago, Erik Araña showcased his GI Joe Resolute customs and display, which was a stacked Ultarama setup, but missing one level. I had an extra level. He had a gallery of customs for sale, and let me pick one for trade. There were three that really caught my eye, but the one I was going to steal the recipe for and make myself won out in the end: 1st Appearance Serpentor.

As an added bonus, Erik send me copies of his concept sketches, as well as his backstory in making the custom, which he graciously allowed me to share with joecustoms.com:

Erik Araña wrote:
My story is pretty simple. I was never happy with the 25th Serpentor figures. I feel they were a missed opportunity in design. I always loved his look in the first appearance in the comics. If I could redesign him I would make him shirtless and covered in tattoos that all refer to his genetic make up in some way. I also would make him big like Roadblock. The other thing I hate about the 25th is that his cowl is two pieces. I always hated that (even as a kid) and think it just looks cooler as one piece like in the comics.

... here's some concept art of him I was working on a while back for a pitch.

I really dig it!

Very cool!
That is my favorite look for Serpentor too. I already have a cowl combined just like that, so I may have to pick up one of those JP figures to copy this. Thanks for sharing, and congrats on a very cool piece.

Yes.

Cool. That Speed Metal head is hard to match up due to his skin tone. Gotta track down that JP figure now.

Very jealous, Spectre. My TRU doesn't care much collector stuff, so I never see this kind of stuff in person. He looks awesome. My friend bought two of the hunters and says they suck as far as articulation and holding their weapons.

Just got home from work after getting the mail.

Received a flat package from Florida. Opened it up to discover my Emerald City Comics purchase of Adam Riches RAH #212 cover has a permanent crease from top to bottom about four inches in on the left and the corners are a bit dog-eared.

It was shipped sandwiched between two pieces of cut down U-Haul box panels and shrink-wrapped.

For the price of shipping and handling, I expected a lot better packing, not cheap packing material.

Contacted Emerald City Comics for replacement or refund...
