Had an idea to do some basalt styled columns, when I came across a handful of brown paper craft boxes in my unpacking. First checked out some formations online, then glued them to a foamboard base:

Then I wanted the details, like cracks and fissures, so I took out the woodburner with the needle tip:

Now I just have to decide whether I want them basalt, emerald, aquamarine, or tourmaline, since these gem varieties share the same growth pattern. I am also tempted to turn the wide flat base into a portal with photo reactive runes carved on the top.

In Cap Stuff thread 1, I had shown that I made a medusa companion in invisibility mode due to the great head Darkwynter had given me. This of course meant that I would have to make her normal form, for shots where we are not invisible or chameleonic. I named her Megera, and here she is. I kept her blue, because out of thousands on inspiring web images, only one person made a blue scaled medusa and I dug it:

Her story and companionship is a whole diorama novel into itself.

Found a use for those mechanical spiders from the Iron Spider Spiderman sets:

I hate painting with a passion, but even I could not help appreciate what paint did for that monochrome treasure pile:

A few years ago I had said what I would do if I had one of those Mortal Kombat thrones, and Dark Jedi stated that it would be good that if we said we were going to do such things, it would be nice to show them from time to time, well, I'm showing. It is now ready for the painting, which will be antique copper skull, black marble base, stone texture throne, and antique brass rune walls behind the throne, the cracks in the skull might, accent on the might, be neon orange and photo reactive. Oh, if you're wondering what those two drilled holes are for, remember that impaled victim in my 'Boring' thread? Well, mow you know where they are going:

Oh, and there will be a curvy gal chained to one of those rings...

Excellent stuff. All around great work. Very inspiring.

Really like the first piece. Great use of found items. Can't wait to see how those come out.

Thanks all around. The basalt columns I always wanted to do ever since I saw the Giants Causeway when my Aer Lingus flight flew past them many years ago. Sight to see.

Ugh, back to painting eyes, lips and details. Fighting through a sciatic response which won't let me stand, sit, or even lie down. Bad disc.

Been wanting to build a bunch of basalt columns for years to make a movie-esque Oa dio for my Green Lanterns. Was afraid I'd have to carve a ton of foam to make it happen.

Where did you pick up those boxes originally?

I don't know where Cap got them, but I know Michaels has them.

Brilliant use of them. I've been wanting to make a base for Superman and this will be perfect for something sort of Fortress of Solitude-y.

Pluv is right, Michael's stores had the larger box, and the smaller boxes were in a set like those you'd find in the Martha Stewart section of the store. Just gave it the FolkArt Pure Black treatment, and am leaning towards a nice aquamarine metallic paint with some pearlescent dry brushing to bring out the corners. Will definitely turn the flat base into a portal.
