Silent Attack is an Adventure Wheels Kayak with a bunch of added bits and bobs.

Because I am insane, or maybe because Celebration always gets me working lately I'm going to try and do some more challenges (in addition to finishing a commission and putting together entries for the PHX contest and the NJC, or trying to anyway).

When I finished up the Black Major I thought I should try and do another figure, and maybe an Alpha vehicle too.

Hit Wal-Mart this morning looking for the exclusive Dark Knight Returns figures they're carrying (found the ones I needed too!) and saw these in the toy car aisle.

Image

So, let's see if I can't finish up my own versions of these . . .

Started parting out the vehicles.

The flat boat has some nifty accessories. Dunno what I'll do with the giant duck or the O-ring guy, but it's pretty cool for ten bucks

Image

The boat has storage in the seats, which I love, but they use living hinges, and those won't last forever. Have to do something about those.

Image

Peeled off the stickers and immediately stuck them back onto a piece of the box insert I'd cut out.

Image

Since I already know the sticker fits the area I'll need stripes on the finished product, I can use this to make a template with my tape.

lol - I picked up that same canoe/kayak set yesterday because of OB's Adventure People thread.

Now I regret sending my Chap Mei kayak to beav - I wouldn't mind building that AF set.

Moved on to the Silent Assault. I was planning to go simple with this one, but that went out the window once I started.

Parting out all the greebles

Image

Modding a Chap Mei handheld light for the bow mounted spotlight

Image

Image

Image

Decided to mount everything an put all the holes I'd need in the kayak before I started painting anything. I'm only doing yellow on the bow to start, but I don't want to risk damaging it going at this thing with the Dremel. This is when I decided that the thing needed a working Ammo crate. So, I found a usable box, I think it's Playmobil.

Then I masked off the area I was going to cut out.

Image

Rough cut

Image

Near final cuts

Image

It fits!

Image

Little Apoxie to fill in the ugly bits

Image

And it's ready to paint.

Image

I have a coat down on each of the boats, the yellow I'm using coats pretty well, but I'll need 2 or three to really get the look I'm after.

Went a little heavy here, hoping it doesn't stand out once the black is on.

Ain't that always the way?

And OB's stuff absolutely got me thinking about what I could do for AF with the Adventure Wheels sets, I just wasn't expecting to be doing it so soon.

Started working on the benches.

Cut the lids off and trimmed away the hinges

Image

Cut some styrene

Image

To create some bits to help hold the lids in place.

And boom, finished benches, ready for paint

Image

Pieced out Beaver and Stakeout

Image

and got some paint down

Image

Started cutting the mask for the bow stripes on the kayak

Image

But got overzealous and had to strip the paint and re-do it

Decided that the new paint on the Kayak was set enough to take the chance. Hopefully I'm right.

The circle in the center is for placement of the stripe edges. I have an SAS Force waterslide that'll go there.

Image

Ready to paint

Image

Sure hope that the mask works . . . .

This is looking great. Well done. Love what you "could" do with a simple repaint, but this is so much better.

Thanks Squashfest! Part of me thinks I could have gotten by with just a repaint, but I know I'm going to be a lot more satisfied with this. Case in point, I was tempted to just go with a solid stripe instead of the progressively thinning ones used on the original vehicles, buuuut . . . .

Image

A bit of bleed, but nothing I can't fix. Now if I can just keep myself from messing with it long enough for the paint to cure . . .

Fantastic. Love the process. Can't wait to see how these develop.

That kayak, I thought I'd be happy with the club's kayaks, but with the kibble and stripes, yours is already 110% better.
