Big Boa is yet another favorite of mine from childhood. When the GIJCC Big Boa head started being cast, I knew I wanted to do a Big Boa of some type. The GIJCC version was so good though, I didn't want to simply do a remake of that, I wanted something unique and to show a different side of the character. What would Big Boa be like on the battlefield? A bruiser no doudt. When I thought about this, I saw a huge armored beast reigning down destruction in a hail of lead from a chaingun. And what does M.D.N.W. stand for? "Mass Destruction, No Whining!"

I have had SK Omega characters on my customs radar for a while. I pieced together most of the main cast last year, but never got around to painting and accessorizing them. This project gave me the excuse I needed to get off my behind and get them done. I find it fitting that these characters would be included in a GI Joe toy line as they were created by the fathers of the modern GI Joe mythos. Foxtrot ended up being my favorite. The combination of dark blue and teal really works nicely for a toy.

For Resurgence 1, I made the Crusher Tank. For Resurgence 2, I made the Cougar IFV. For part 3, I felt the Joes needed an armored personnel carrier. Since PTE makes a decent one, I started there. I removed the "buckets" that took up all the interior space and modified the inside to fit the quad. Finally, I added a hinge on the back to make the door.

Initially, the Centurion was to be a simple Armored Personnel Carrier. I wanted to modify the back with seats to carry troops. Once I actually got around to making the changes, I realized that it would be a lot more fun if it carry a small vehicle, similar to the Cobra Anaconda last year. This time around, I wanted to keep the vehicle believable (as opposed to the Splitjaw Recon Bike last year), so I immediately thought of the PTE quad. It is a fun, sturdy and compact vehicle that would have seen a lot of play if I had it as a kid. Fortunately, it fit perfectly into the back of the Centurion.

The Centurion started out medium gray. I quickly got bored with such a simple color scheme and decided to hand paint some urban camouflage onto the chassis. Unfortunately, that went sideways really quickly. The camouflage did not come out as I hoped. I tested a few other options that did not really work out. That's when the idea of painting it up as the '83 APC struck me. The original APC was my very first GI Joe vehicle. I remember getting it for my birthday in 1983 (along with Flash and Grunt), so it holds a special place in my memories. I think the PTE version repainted works well as an updated version.

Mudflap is a character I created for one of my very first customs several years ago. At the time, I was still experimenting with paints, brushes, painting techniques and spray paints. I never really created a personality or characteristics for him aside from his specialty. The original custom’s purpose was simply to find a use for spare ARAH fodder parts as well as practice my skills. However, looking back, I still like some of the ideas I had at the time and thought it would be fun to revisit and complete the character with what I know now.

Aleph came about for the simplest of reasons. I got the head for the figure as a freebie after placing an order with Coby at AVACS Lab! My original intention was to place him in the Mission Brazil set, until Oreobuilder came up with the unique Cobra color scheme for that set. I didn't want to deviate from the set colors, so Aleph was placed further along in the project. His look and color scheme is an nod to the DIC cartoon series.

So there's this fella on Joecustoms that goes by Joemichaels, and being on the losing end of the Red Laser/Blue Laser contest, well he owed me a few customs. He delivered at Joe Con in Springfield, and one of them was using a robot body from Iron Man. A funny side note, is that for some reason, I always end up tearing apart the customs he gives me. I did the same thing for Resurgence 2 when I tore apart his Samurai Destro to make Kobura Kai.

This figure started off with just that bull head which I found in a Wal Mart clearance toy. I had it sitting around for awhile, and had it placed on a B.A.T. body for fun. After awhile, I thought it would make for a cool large robot, but I couldn't find the body in which to use it on. Then I remembered JM70's figure, and went to work. :shifty:

I struggled a bit with this one. The build was pretty straighforward, I added kibble here and there so it didn't look completely like the Iron Man drone figure. It's the paint I had problems with. I'm not sure the difference in plastic is the reason, but the paints didn't like to stick well. In the end, I feel it came out ok, but I also feel it could have been alot smoother.

Thanks to members of Joecustoms for helping with the Acronym name.

Tele-Vipers are a pretty popular troop builder and they showed up frequently in the Sunbow series. Yet there have not been many figures made of them over the years. For my customs, I wanted to avoid simply making a version of the Concept Case Tele-Viper, so I looked at the Spytroops/Valor vs Venom years for inspiration. The Python Patrol version had a solid build and color scheme, so I tried to stay true to that recipe.

A communications station is the kind of small playset that could have been released at the height of Joe’s popularity in the mid ‘80s. I could see it as something that would be fought over by the Joes and Cobra. I tried to incorporate as many features as I could to make it feel like a real toy.

There hasn't been much in the way of "jet pack" troopers for Joe outside of Starduster, so the idea to create a new character was on my to do list.

I modeled him after the Rocketeer for strictly nostalgic reasons. After looking at my the initial build, he looked too similar!

I went back and started to add some different colors to the boots and gloves, and added the sky blue to the helmet. The backpack was pieced together with various parts out of my fodder bin and a Marvel pack. I imagine that the bottom thrusters and wings are what gets him in the air, and the secondary thrusters from the wings are what gets him going even faster. He was a fun figure to build and one of my favorites.

After I made Street Hawk for my Funskool project in 2015, I really liked the modern TARGAT recipe that I created for that figure, so I pieced together a couple more. At first, they were meant to be included in the Prologue’s Iron Grenadier gift set. However, I moved them out to make room for Darklon. They were homeless for a while, but when I came up with the Mission Sets, TARGAT fit right in.

For the colors, I adapted them to Destro’s pallet. I always thought that the silver and blue of the original did not work with the Iron Grenadiers, so I substituted for gold and red.

Once I decided that the TARGATs would represent our space environment, I searched for a suitable mini playset that could act as a companion piece. I went back and forth on a few ideas, but finally remembered a satellite that had been sitting in my fodder box for a while. After that, everything clicked. I gave it some weaponry and a new Iron Grenadiers color scheme and it was done.

The Fer-De-Lance was very fun to build and changed a great deal from the initial plans. In fact, it was originally to be based on a Star Wars Y-Wing bomber, but when I found the Optimus Prime upgrade and saw how big it was, I knew I had to incoporate it into this vehicle. This ship has a lot of parts mashed together and has more screws than any other custom I have ever done.

If Joe is on the Moon, they are going to need an Astronaut. In Resurgence 1, Oreobuilder and I tried to make customs using a wide variety of specialties. Not having any inclination that we would do part 2, let alone part 3, we covered our bases, and an Astronaut by the name of Splashdown was made for part 1. Here we are 3 years later and finishing up the Resurgence universe, and the storyline takes us to the moon. Rather than make a new character, I decided to tackle Splashdown. To me it made the most sense. The entire Resurgence line was meant to mimic an actual product line, and the ARAH series had multiple version and repaints in some cases of characters over the years. With that in mind, bringing back Splashdown made more sense than a new character. I deviated heavily from the suit he originally wore, trying to make it more of a combat type astronaut suit. He was a fun build. I struggled with the paint apps at times, but I'm ok with the results.

What's a Viper on the Moon going to look like? I looked at various Vipers over the years for some inspiration. A slightly modified helmet (but keeping the goggles for some humor). Heavily layered clothing, some pads, rather large moon boots, and traditional Viper colors are what I decided to go with. Cobra has Astro Vipers from floating around in space and what not, but the Moon Vipers are meant to be running around the Moon base and outside bouncing around on the surface.

In the planning stages of the project, we came up with the idea for a moon based super weapon and it stood to reason one of us would have to make that weapon. I had a WIP in a very primitive stage for a large gun sitting around that used a found item in the form of a large plastic protective shipping dome that came off a photography flash setup. I popped that onto the Halo energy station and it looked very promising. The Sonic Screwdriver made a nice barrell for the weapon and the control panel and fuel source were pieced together from my parts bins. It does actually rotate and my son will most likely be stealing it and making it his own.

From the desk of DanOfTheDead: Glitch 3.0 with BUG (Bionic UpGrade Symbiote)

When Bucky approached me about contributing a figure to the third round of Resurgence, we bounced a few ideas around until I asked if anyone was working on a new version of Glitch, my personal favorite character from the first two years of the project, and he let me take a crack at it.

I eventually combined my plans for Glitch with an idea I had for a Joe themed DARPA Big Dog robot, and started trying all sorts of random part combinations. When I came up with the basic build of the accessory robot, I thought it would be a neat play feature if its parts could be interchangeable with Glitch.

I tried to make use of parts that had been used for Glitch and some of the SWARM characters, suggesting that he had to rebuild himself using SWARM debris after the events of Resurgence 2.

An upgraded, exo-atmospheric version of the Skystriker has been on my mind for a long time. In the show they did it by putting a single rocket on the back between the vertical stabilizers, but I wanted it to be much more sophisticated than that. I was inspired by several pieces of concept art I saw online of not only a forward swept wing Skystriker, but also several forward swept wing Macross planes. With the boosters, this plane definitely has a Robotech feel and we thought that was just fine as we try to inspire nostalgic feelings. I chose to do a female pilot because it's always nice to see more variety in that aspect of GI Joe. Strafe is one of my favorite customs to date. I really like how she turned out.

I originally conceived the character of Mastermind in 2008ish. At the time, I wanted to add a character to the Cobra hierarchy that specialized in planning, strategy and tactics. I always seemed like it was an aspect that was missing from Cobra. Secondly, I wanted an excuse to build a Cobra strategy room diorama. Third, I wanted to create a character using parts from my fodder bin that don't see much re-use. The original figure was a mash-up of 25th anniversary Cobra Commander and Snowjob parts.

I was pretty satisfied with the result at the time that Mastermind was created. However, I have had the itch to revisit the character and modernize the build for a while now. When I saw Ron Rudat’s concept Cobra Commander on Facebook, my first thought was ‘’That’s Mastermind!’’. I used the sketch as inspiration and I finally have a figure that meets my vision for the character.

The jeep that the new Badger is made out of was an awesome little vehicle before I decided to customize it up. I bought it with the intention of painting it up and stickering it for Joes, but the Joes didn't need another vamp. A Badger on steroids fit the bill for the custom though, I loved the original Badger as a kid. That thing could take a beating.
Offroad was a fun custom to make as well. The additions on the vest went on rather smoothly, and the coloring was meant to mimic the original Badger colors.

The process of finding characters and specialties that have yet to be done in the Joe universe is somewhat challenging. One thing to do that was done in the ARAH line was to release new characters with the same specialty, which we do as well for the Resurgence Projects.

Another idea that I try to employ is to take a specialty that was only made for one team, and apply it to the other side. Braingames started out on paper as a Cobra Psyche Out, a deceptive warfare kind of guy. Reading up on Psyche Out and how he was used in the comics had me taking his Cobra counterpart in a different way, that of an Ivy League type that uses his intelligence to manipulate people. Kilcarr came up with a Professor Braingames bio and filecard that captures the essence of what I had in mind for the character, absolutely nailing it.

The Coastal Defense rocket launcher was the first small playset that I came up with for Resurgence 3. It is actually the one that spawned the idea for the other five. I really liked the idea of going back to ARAH’s roots with small simple playsets. Since we had already decided that the story for part 3 was going to take us around the World, I wanted to have a Mission Set for each environment that we visited. I’m really happy with the way these turned out.

Decimator has been on my to-do list for a while (like so many other things). The Resurgence III storyline depends on GI Joe fighting Cobra in several different environments around the World, so we needed to include several specialty troopers in our line up. I figured it was a good opportunity to get these done. I tried to stay as true as possible to the vintage version, but modernizing it somewhat as well.

We decided to do some self customs this time around and Radar is the character I came up for a Joe loosely based on me. The name Radar comes from a dog I had as a kid, a Golden Retriever who was a great friend. He had been named after the MASH character by the breeder, in fact the entire litter had been named after MASH characters. I was always into video games as a kid and so thought that would be an ineteresting angle to play up and since I have never served in the military, I figured may as well make me operate an attack ROV and look pretty civilian in attire. The rest was just arming up an appropriate airframe. I also included some 79's as a nod to my customizing moniker.

I was proud of the character and the custom of Whisp from Resurgence 1, and using the techniques and lessons I've learned over the last 3 years, really wanted to do another version. I received great feedback on the 1st version of the figure at the Springfield Con.

Lucky for me, I had a great flexible cast helmet sitting in my fodder that looked very similar to the V1, and didn't want to drill a hole in in for a ponytail. I opted to do pigtails instead, and give the figure a look you don't normally see on female Joes. She's one of my favorite characters I've created for the Resurgence Universe.

Originally slated for Resurgence 2, Swift didn't make the cut and was shuffled to Part 3. Due to time constraints and the large amount of characters in Part 2, holding her off til the last round allowed me to really take as much time as I wanted with the custom. The final product isn't much different from the original build with the exception of the head. Switching to the Avengers head with more flexible hair allowed myself to then build up a backpack. A fun side note on the custom is that the bomb on the leg is in fact removable and I made a peg for it to come on and go back on. I went with a lot of "Joe" colors on her as a call back to the vintage 83-85 look.

GI Joe Rolling Thunder by Dusty79
"The ROLLING THUNDER is a roving arsenal of GI JOE power! This quad-tracked vehicle bristles with weapons! I have had the idea for a dual tracked piece of armor for a while now. Originally, this vehicle was mocked up using a Retaliation HISS tank body and was meant to be a Cobra tank for Resurgence 2. I ended up scrapping it to make the HISS Mk IV. One day during the long build process for my Resurgence 3 ideas, I decided to see what I could do with the Sigma Six Dragon Hawk and it seemed to be pretty neat. I worked out some armaments and it kind of fell into place. The scout vehicle does not fit inside like the original Rolling Thunder, but it still adds play value. Bucky helped me out with a driver for the scout vehicle as I was pretty well buried in a long custom queue and he came up with a great character and figure.

Crash Course by bucky
Dusty79 decided to wow us and build a giant Joe vehicle in the tradition of ARAH greats such as the ThunderClap and Rolling Thunder. It was large enough that it was going to need two operators, and I volunteered to make the secondary driver, as you see here. Dusty built a vehicle for him to drive to go along with the massive one as well! I tried to go for an authentic ARAH inspired look and color scheme to Crash Course.
