I designed up a Blockman style figure and printed him out. I had put the head on a ball-joint, but it didn't live up to being used as a peg, so I had to glue it in place. The pegs and holes are all 5mm and brick or TF weapon compatible. The hands can hold a 3mm peg. You can see him holding a Mega Construx gun in the pictures and in the last two pics, you see where I pegged a TF gun I had previously printed and a brick piece to him.

Looks like fun.

I love the look of these kinds of projects... did you design him in a 3d art program? I tried to use Maya years ago and could not get the hang of it. Is there something with a nice easy learning curve you could recommend?

Yeah, I designed him in SketchUp. It's fairly easy to use and so is Tinkercad. If you're wanting to do organic looking things, I like Sculpeo.

Thanks! I'm hoping to add more Blockman stuff to my line-up once I get this guy perfected. Cosmetic tweaks to make various bots will be easy enough once I have everything else working right, and I've gotten some good feedback other places on things to do to improve the print strength (some of it obvious, but I overlooked it). The nice thing about 3D models is they can be scaled easily enough, so I'm contemplating printing one of these guys out about 10" tall to be a bot for the Joes.

I never had the actual Blockman figures when I was a kid, but I had a bunch of knock-offs that were about half the size (maybe an inch tall) and came out of the capsule machines in the foyer of Wal-Mart. I loved those little guys and all their accessories - they were the humans (in power suits) for my Transformers. I wish I still had those little guys, so when I decided to try my hand at designing/printing a full figure, they were my go-to. I might try printing this guy at half scale and see how that works out, as well.

Are Sketchup / Sculpeo easy to learn and use, for newbies of the trade?

Would it require autocad knowledge or something like that?

They're pretty easy to pick up, regardless of skill level. SketchUp is basically drawing shapes and sticking them together. Sculpeo is virtual sculpting, so you have a ball of class on screen that you're pinching, pulling, squeezing, etc.

FYI it sounds like you are talking about Sculptris... I have never heard of a modeling software called sculpeo. was it discontinued?

Gah, yes, Sculptris, not sure where I got the name Sculpeo from at all. Thanks for the comment on the figure! He's right at 2" tall. I made him to work with Mega Construx figures as a human-sized android, or with Dia-nauts as a bigger 'bot.

I'm slightly more impressed, now that I know how tiny it is!

I'd give TinkerCAD.com a try first just because it's browser-based and you don't have to download anything. It's exactly what the beginner needs, imho.
