Toyfair has come and gone and it seems like a lot of companies are jumping on the retro "Kenner" bandwagon.

Super 7 is still leading the way with more licenses than ever with new MOTU figures, Robocop, Baseball, Pee Wee, Transformers, Aliens and a lot more. It's like an 80's kid dream toy box where all the characters are finally compatible together.
Mezco is joining the parade with their new 5 Points line which will features Hanna Barbera characters like the Scooby Doo gang and monsters,Birdman and Space Ghost, the 6M Dollar Man and the Warriors.
Even Hasbro decided to have their piece of the retro pie by rereleasing the original Kenner Star Wars figures which of course made a lot of waves in the collecting community.

Would I prefer that those figures were released with more articulations, yes, but man am I thrilled about what was announced.

I just wish 'retro' meant imitating the TRUE 18th articulation standard as set forth by the Micronauts line instead of second-place SW crap that came about because of OPEC.

Lame in every way.

I just can't get too excited about this, at least not the Super7 part. I've not liked Super7's schtick from day one -- they use nostalgia as a way to make cheap figures and charge a premium for them. And I don't mean just the 5-POA; it's also the soft details that often are impossible to tell who it is without the paint cues. For instance, look at this:

If that didn't say Rocky in the text above it and have the red-white-blue trunks, I'd have no clue who that was supposed to be. The head sculpt could just as easily be Vinnie Barbarino or Potsie.

So with S7 snapping up all those licenses, that lessens the chances of getting decent figures from a better company.

The reason they can squat on so many licenses is by not paying actor-likeness fees; which has the added advantage of not having to do as much work. They may as well be making Bend'ems figures.

I guess I always saw those reaction figures as made for the "display on the card" folks who buy a figure of there favorite movie character or chase limited issue figures like hotwheel guys.

for customs they are useful though too expensive. my entire pulp simpsons project, and my future predators project wouldn't be possible without those poorly made figures. I think they are great for $1-$5 depending on their use. $20 for a nice card not so much, but if you can't print your own cards you might reuse the cards with your customs.

I know how you feel, as soon as I got Joes, my SW figures became bathtub toys featuring Scuba Fett.
