eBay would literally be shooting themselves in the foot if they make this mandatory to everyone

i didn't read the whole page, the explanation of the different businesses and whatnot, but it says If you’ve received a notification to sign up: it’s your time, register now. i have sold maybe 100 things on ebay in 15 or so years,

it is hard for me to believe they are going to allow two types of transactions forever. now they get a piece of the selling price, shipping, tax and insertion fees. before they only got % of the selling price plus insertion fee and per item fees.

simpler fees! simply they want them all! it was a price i was willing to pay for a large market. it sucks as i was just rolling good then got the "must use a bank account message". i considered starting another bank account for just my ebay selling, add another fee! why not but then ebay would have to bully in on banks too! i guess everyone is trying to beat amazon at the "monopoly" game. next i'm sure ebay will be bought by walmart and we will pay them fees too :)

today from ebay.

"eBay
You missed the deadline to update your account details, but don’t worry-we’re giving you more time. Update your account details by January 20, 2021, or your ability to revise or relist existing listings, or create new listings will be disabled. Don’t wait!

Get started ➔

Let’s put money directly in your pocket*
eBay now manages the end-to-end selling experience on our marketplace, including payments.

This means:

No more PayPal payment processing fees.

You get paid directly to your bank account, not your PayPal account.

Most sellers will pay the same or less than before.**

Please disregard this email if you’ve already updated your account details.

FAQ’s:

Why is the way I’m getting paid on eBay changing?
We are updating the payments experience on eBay to enhance the buying and selling experience on the marketplace. We believe this is an opportunity to deliver a more seamless experience for both buyers and sellers, while offering a greater choice in payment and payout options.

Is there anything I need to do right now?
Please update your account details, including adding your bank account information, by January 20, 2021 to ensure there are no interruptions to your ability to create new listings and avoid potential payout delays. Learn more and get started here.

How are my fees changing?
Your eBay selling fees and expenses will be automatically deducted from your earnings before you get paid. The remainder of your earnings will go directly to your bank account, not your PayPal account. You'll no longer have to pay PayPal payment processing fees and no more separate monthly fee payments. Examples of eBay selling fees include: insertion fees, listing upgrades, and store subscription fees.

*As it relates to funds settlement.

**Savings based on annual total sales volumes, and comparisons of (a) prior eBay final value fees plus typical 3rd party payment provider fees, with (b) new eBay final value fees (without any 3rd party processing fees).

so they keep kicking the can down the road. maybe if everyone refuses like i have they will "decide" to let sellers choose how they get paid.

I froze up when they asked for my SSN in order to send money to my bank account.

Has anybody here updated their info? I don't recall ever entering my SSN to transfer PayPal money to my bank account.

Thanks for staying on top of this. I was considering listing on ebay, but I will stick with local sales.

They have no legitimate reason to have my SS#! :-x

I got the same thing now too as did my brother. It seems they are ramping up this thing.

I just filed a BBB.org complaint against them because of this. I cannot see how it is legal for them to ask for my SS#. If they want it then they will have to make me an employee. :verymad:

It's a shame because I like to buy on ebay, but people will just migrate to other marketplaces without big brother business practices.

By law any organization working in "banking" is required to collect a SS# in order to help prevent $ laundering and what not. Since Ebay is trying to handle it's own payment processing they are taking on the roll of a bank and thus have to collect SS#.

I still haven't gotten any of this sent to me. Thing is I'll just provide it. It's not that secret. Paypal has it, my credit card companies have it, my bank has it, "LASER BLAST" it's the number I provide second most often after my phone number.

Paypal has been required to collect SS# for at least two decades. Maybe, just maybe, if someone joined prior to 2001 they might not have provided a SS#. But I assure you they have it and anyone that has an account has given it to them. Most people just don't remember cause it's not that big a deal.

The government absolutely requires it.

i don't know when we got PP nut it was very early on. after i got our account froze/hit 2 times buying a bunch of gun stuff all over the internet. i promised never again to buy without PP. that has worked for keeping our account fraud free for a long time.

PayPal will track the payment volume of your account to check whether your payment volume exceeds both of these levels in a calendar year:
l can't find all the links right now, but my wife googled it on her phone. to be a pro seller ot if you sell enough to get reported for taxes you do need a ssn#

it varies by state on the tax thing. MS where i live was the wild west when i started online. no tax ever. now amazon, walmart, ebay, and many more charge state sales tax.

"How does PayPal report my sales to the IRS?
$20,000 USD in gross payment volume from sales of goods or services in a single calendar year
200 payments for goods or services in the same year

Some US States require merchant reporting at a lower threshold:
Vermont, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland: $600 USD in gross payment volume from sales of goods or services in a single calendar year regardless of the number of transactions;
Illinois: $1,000 USD in gross payment volume of goods or services in a single calendar year with at least 4 payment transactions processed."

there is also a ssn# required if you use PP debit which is a bank service. i don't do any of that either.

"PayPal requires Social Security Number to verify your identity. If you are a buyer, it is not standard practice to provide an SSN unless you apply for PayPal credit. When you sign up for a line of credit through PayPal, you need to provide the last four digits of your social security number. You also have to supply your SSN if you apply for a PayPal debit Mastercard, which requires your entire SSN."

no idea if this site is current or official. it parrots what i quoted above, plus what i quoted in my last post.
https://mollaeilaw.com/blog/paypal-ssn-information/

i never sold more than 20 items a year, until last year. so i never reached any threshold of being a "pro seller". i know when i got PP i would of checked "buyer account" because i had no interest in selling anything.
