Thanks all.

I gotta admit, Liefeld has always been my least favorite artist. I was inspired by the 90s work of Jim Lee and McFarlane for sure. Still I take the comparison as a compliment. Comatose is one of 2 characters I want to make into figures. I'm still working out parts for both and I figure I should try my hand at drawing them in a more modern style.

His influence was so ubiquitous, that it doesn't really matter if one likes his art or despises it. Me, I used to hate now I'm just indifferent, full disclosure. His artwork influenced designs across pop culture for a decade. That said, the Comatose/Flatline design works, and that's full credit to you. I'd love to see the update when you get to it.

I hear ya on that. I have a lot of friends in the industry and we talk about the old guard 90s artists a lot and he's the one that really gets people riled up for or against. Which really means at the end of the day he did his job, made his name, and is kicking back with his $2million Net Worth while we are all just trying to get by.

I'm hoping to find some time this weekend to draw a modern version. Honestly, I'm nervous cause I haven't drawn seriously in years. So maybe y'all will see it, maybe ya won't.

If you listen to podcasts, I highly recommend Tim Ferris' interview with Todd McFarlane from a few weeks back.

Like Liefeld, he's another love-or-hate creator. He readily acknowledges that he's not the best or technically correct artist, but really stresses the importance of working, working, working, and working. That work ethic, along with some earned luck and a level of confidence that I'll never be able to understand* got him to where he is.

It really gave a lot of context to my opinion of the man.

*not meant as an insult, I say this as a failed wanna-be comic book artist who got to work briefly at the sub-sub-subcontractor level.

Im not a podcast guy but I will say I love McFarlane. I had the opportunity years ago to be in charge of the Todd McFarlane Retrospective at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA now defunct). I was the lead and curator. The guy was amazing. Super humble. Incredibly kind. He stayed super late just to make sure he got to talk to everyone and sign stuff.

Sorry about derailing your customs thread with comic book talk, but since nobody I know reads comics...I really liked all the guys you mentioned as well. There is nobody that read that early 90s X-Men run and wasn't inspired by Jim Lee. I mean to this day people refer to those X-Men designs as "Jim Lee X-Men". Erik Larson was another one I really like when he took over Spiderman. My favorite who never gets mentioned was Ron Lim. He made me a Silver Surfer fan. His art work made me buy my first Silver Surfer comic and after that I was hooked. The fact that he then penciled the Infinity Gauntlet run was incredible too.

No worries. I love comics even more then I love Joes so it’s all good.

It took me a while to become a Larsen fan but he’s one of my top now. Kim did the best Surfer. His style definitely made me a fan of the character and his work on IG was excellent.

I’ve been looking through my old sketchbooks that I found out in my garage and trying to figure out which ones I could make of. Maybe I’ll put some pics in here and see what others think.

I really had a rich diverse universe made up when I was young. It even came with an ending. Like I’d make my comics but when the final issue hit that was that. I’d create a new universe.

I realized I have another Critter I printed up and before I painted and assembled it I wanted to show the detail on it. 2 Dark had asked about the teeth and as you can see it has several rows on til and bottom. These printers are amazing

Here’s what my desk looks like today. I swore I’d finish a figure today but instead I started 2 more WIPs; the elephant and another Ewok

Ooh- nice! I've got a similar elephant guy on my workbench (using an ML Rhino for the body) but not digging the head I'm using, so I haven't made any progress.

Planning to armor yours up with medieval weapons, or ???
