I don't remember anything close to this much positive buzz at any point before ROC. Whether it was casting, or the cliche black suits, or nanomites, or whatever, ROC just felt off, even in concept. For me personally, no part of the build up or even the movie itself left me feeling as good about it as this trailer does for the new movie. With the seven nation army music being played that way, it actually gave me a similar vibe as when I first saw the Watchmen trailer. Many people didn't like how that movie actually unfolded, but I loved it, so I make the comparison favorably.
Anyway, as for the personality, it really seemed like the ROC cast were there against their will and mailed in the performance, though the same could be said of the writers, in fairness. You don't get that feeling here. The Rock knows how to sell it, and makes it easier to suspend the disbelief for this kind of action. Plus, Dennis Quaid was just miscast before. In contrast, that 10 second scene from Willis, even if he doesn't have another single line, nails it.
In short, and judging exclusively by "tone" this seems to me like it's capable of being a classic action movie, while ROC seemed like a Sy-Fy weekly feature.
least, that's what I'm hoping for.
I'm quoting this for thruth. This is exactly how I feel. It's nice to have such a positive response and optimism to a GI Joe movie. It's a nice change from all the [LASER BLAST] that came with RoC.
