During the early 21st century, in the decline of the American government, Cobra bought its way into the UN and quickly became a "legit" world power through politics and other, shadier methods. They stood unopposed after the breakup of the GI Joe team and seized the chance to rise to power. By the late 21st century, Cobra was among the most powerful corporations in the world.

Finally, in 2195 - 2198, the world was reduced to five major corporations: Cobra, AmeriCORPS, Oktober Industries, Japanitronix, and Green Fusion Power. Cobra controlled most of North American and parts of South America, and quickly emerged as the most powerful empire-corporation in the world. Now, Cobra is on the brink of world control, with only a small band of terrorist attemtping to stop it.
